Really wished I would’ve liked this book more… started out good, the story gripped me but the way women are written and talked about in this book is just plain misogynistic. Plus fantasy or not, I cannot deal with virginity and getting your period being talked about as “flower” and “flowering” so annoying, and the sheer number of mentioning of men’s “seeds” and “seed pods” make me insane. 

& don’t even get me started on the orientalism / the way the isolated city in the middle of the desert is described as middle eastern and villainized- truly, I thought we were done with this.

Plotwise: The pacing felt off at times, felt like there could’ve been spend more time on their training - like how did Arlen suddenly become superhuman? 

Also trigger warning and spoiler:

rape is yet again being used by a male author without it having any affect on the plot or development of that character, which frankly pisses me off. Like do better.

diese welt ist einf sooo gut durchdacht (städte heißen zb nicht ästhetisch sonder praktisch zb tal der holzfäller und auch das ganze mit den Horclingen (den Feinden aus dem Horc aka der Hölle) klingt einf komplett schlüssig und abgerundet

First off, graphic audio is awesome. So much fun to listen to. 

I read this when it first came out and loved it. Second time around the plot is still exciting and it’s still worth a read, but I would warn that the author is very clearly a bit toxic. Men behave in a way that is very obviously sexual harassment but that’s brushed off as harassment. A lot of stock is put in the virginity and purity of female characters. There’s a lot of boys will be boys type thinking that just doesn’t fly anymore. 

The main female character is gang raped as her first sexual experience. A few days later she seeks to make it better by immediately having sex with someone else. Throughout the books she and the people around her seem to be deeply focused on her sexuality. I feel like the author’s sexism is showing constantly.

I did not like how the Krasians were portrayed - almost seems like a caricature of the middle east. And the female characters (how they are and what happens to them) can be very frustrating. World building is pretty incredible though.

L'auteur n'a pas seulement réussi à bien développer des personnages et un monde unique dans lequel on se sent plongé, il a aussi réussi à surprendre en défiant les clichés attendus. En plus d'une très bonne histoire fantastique pleine d'aventure et de suspense, il a réussi à créer une  histoire autour de la détermination, de l'héroïsme et de prendre son destin en mains! 
Vraiment contente d'être tombée sur ce livre au hasard dans une boutique de seconde main
