This is a strange book, wrapped in a story that is just interesting enough to make you think it will improve; and then it ends.

I am so very conflicted on this novel. The first 2/3rds were overall pretty good I loved the coming of age story of Arlen and Leesha and was curious to see where Rojer's story would go. My issues are however the strong focus on sex and "breeding" and the usage of SA later in the novel.

While I do believe Brett was trying to critique the diminished role of women in this world and dissuade notions of "virginal purity" it felt both heavy handed and simultaneously not dissuaded enough. The novel opens and closes with ideas of womanhood equating to birthing children and that birthing children is the end all be all.

Additionally, I kept waiting for Arlen's views on the world and on everyones roles in it to be questioned and become more reasoned but in the end Arlen's views feel mostly unchanged and unchallenged. I hope this is something addressed in the later novels.

As of now I think I will most likely continue though book 2 is not high on my TBR.

The world was fascinating, and it started strong with interesting characters with only ripples of awkward sexism or cringe bits (please, tell me one more time about the messenger's "wolf eyes"). Then suddenly it takes a hard pivot into a racist interlude for a bit before suddenly going weird with
the gang rape of a virgin character followed immediately by the cringiest sex scene with another main character shortly after, telling him to put a baby in her because??? while hoping that he doesn't think she's too inexperienced, etc. Eesh.

Disappointing, as the world and a lot of the story is good, but there are too many gross and weirdly racist/sexist overtones.

First off, graphic audio is awesome. So much fun to listen to.

I read this when it first came out and loved it. Second time around the plot is still exciting and it’s still worth a read, but I would warn that the author is very clearly a bit toxic. Men behave in a way that is very obviously sexual harassment but that’s brushed off as harassment. A lot of stock is put in the virginity and purity of female characters. There’s a lot of boys will be boys type thinking that just doesn’t fly anymore.

The main female character is gang raped as her first sexual experience. A few days later she seeks to make it better by immediately having sex with someone else. Throughout the books she and the people around her seem to be deeply focused on her sexuality. I feel like the author’s sexism is showing constantly.

Argh I wanted to like this book and it had a cool world and premise, and I like a lot of the characters, but the unbelievable female characters and barely-there response to traumatic events (to keep this spoiler free as possible: look at the content warnings left by other readers) really brought it down.

I would have loved this book for it's beautiful and intricate Worldbuilding,  but the ending was ruined by [TW: SA]
an abysmal portrayal of SA. Specifically the sole female mc is raped and then falls "in love" with the guy she meet immediatly after the SA and has at most known him for a couple of days.
