Heads up for those it matters to: suicide is a major theme of this book, so if that's a sensitive topic for you just know that.

Herons Cry was nothing groundbreaking but it was engaging and got me out of an audiobook slump so it served it's purpose well.

Great mystery kept me on the edge of of seat. I loved the characters and I enjoyed the ones I disliked which is a sign of strong writing. Highly recommend reading

The Heron's Cry is the first Ann Cleeves book that I have read.  I have watched several seasons of the Shetland television series, based on her Shetland books, and enjoyed them.  The Heron's Cry with multiple story lines, sensitivity to setting (Devon) and complexity of the main characters is certainly in the spirit of Shetland.

This novel contains elements of a "cozy mystery" while also being unsettling.  It kept me engaged and guessing to the very end.
