The Case of the Lost Boy by Dori Hillestad Butler

This may be the worst children’s book I’ve ever seen published by a major press. It’s not written especially well, but more importantly, it’s terribly inappropriate – a major, major plot point is stranger-danger style kidnapping (that thankfully does not become true), and is really just stunning. The only good thing I can say is that the concept – think a mystery being told from the point of view of the dog from Up – is interesting and different. But to play such a kidnapping card for a book for kids around 10 years old? Really?

A good series for beginning chapter book readers. I plan to get the other 2 in the series. I think kids will like this one.

this is the first in a series about Buddy (King) a Golden Retriever that has lost his family and ended up in the P-O-U-N-D. He resolves to get out of the P-O-U-N-D and solve the mystery of where his old family has gone to. He is picked at the P-O-U-N-D by a boy and his mother who have just moved into the area. His new family lives in the same neighborhood as his old family. It is perfect, now he will be able to find out what has happened to his old family. But while he is "investigating" where his old family is, his new boy, Connor, goes missing. Buddy must now use his detective skills (his nose) to find where Connor has gone.

"Great book" said my dog-loving tutee. She likes the way the dog gives his perspective about living with humans. She wants to read the whole series!

Great first chapter book for mystery lovers and animal lovers too. Story discusses topics of moving and running away from home all through the perspective of a smart dog.

Love the voice of the King/Buddy. A good series for those readers starting with chapter books.
