1. The art style. It looked sketch-y and the colour palette was divine - a mix of pinks, purples, blues, and yellows to represent the four MCs. I loved how expressive and gorgeous the illustrations looked.
2. The friendship between the four women was so natural and beautiful. Their connection was palpable and you could just SEE the love they had for one another.
3. It drove home the point that Black hair is not just a look, but an entire culture that white people like myself can never fully understand the significance of and therefore should not participate in. This book showed me many aspects of Black hair culture (although I am sure there are many more that it did not have the space to cover). It's having a whole day booked out to care for and style your hair; it's the music you listen to while doing it; it's the friends you talk to and the family you connect with. It's the style you choose and why you choose it. It's doing it yourself, having a friend or family member do it, or going to a salon. It's community.
In short, I LOVED this book and you should read it ASAP x

I wouldn't have minded seeing a little more support in certain avenues, specifically when one character is very obviously struggling with severe depression and confides in another character, only to have her experiences totally erased with "you look fine!" and "you don't need medications!" The treatment of that character in general felt clunky to me, but I enjoyed the rest of the book overall. The art was cute and I enjoyed it for the chill, slice-of-life read that it was.
✨ Representation: all four characters are Black, with one of them being Afro-Latinx; one character is bi/pan; brief depiction of an f/f relationship
Moderate: Drug use, Mental illness, Ableism, Homophobia, Dementia, Stalking, Domestic abuse, and Alcohol

"Wash Day Diaries" it's a cute and fun graphic novel that follows the day-to-day life of four best friends in five connected short stories.
I liked the "slice of life" aspect of the book but I felt that all the topics were on treated at a surface level. At some point, I wished it could be longer to give space for development.
Nevertheless, it's refreshing to see a group of female friends being good friends and supporting each other. Also, the level of love and care in everything hair-related it's incredible.
It's a good book that would help a lot of black girls to feel seen and, only for that it's worth it.
TW: depression, abusive relationship, recreational drug use.

This book is a set of five vignettes into the lives of four friends in the Bronx and all the stories are tied to black hair care in one way or another. The first story is a remastered version of the initial mini-comic, now in full color instead of gray-scale. Comparing the two comics, it looks like the panels have been at least partially redrawn (the way the flags hang on page 15 is the main tell) and it looks stunning. The soft blues and purples coloring the scenes are so pretty and peaceful; it's reminiscent of soap bubbles really. Perfect for the framing device. Plot-wise, it's just a slice of life look at Kim washing her hair. I really like it, I think it's simple but not basic, and I think it's a really great setup for the rest of the stories. The other four stories are just as sweet to read, and I hope you'll give this book a chance and experience them for yourself! Love it love it love it, what a great book!
