A great read, sometimes fun, sometimes emotional, and constantly celebrating Black women, their hair, and their friendships with each other. The part with Cookie and her grandma made me cry in the best way.

I’ve been wanting to read this since I saw the cover. I was so excited when I saw it in my local library. Instant grab. The illustrations are absolutely amazing. The attention to details. The way the curls are in the hair, the different body types, the clothes, all the small little details made this book for me. The book follows a group of 4 friends. Each has their own short story and the last story is them coming together.  I’m the end I felt like I wanted more. I know these are very short stories/ graphic novel but I feel like the story line for a couple of the friends could have been more in depth. While I really enjoyed the artwork, there were a few pages with just art that I feel could have been used to expand on the storyline.  Overall I liked the book.

This was cute. I liked the art style.
Only thing that I felt was a weird take was
when Cookie dismissed the idea of taking anti depressants and suggested crystals instead… it was framed in the story as Cookie not understanding the situation and being unhelpful, but then it just kinda ends there. Cookie does help out in the end, but I just found that one chapter a bit weird the way it was never really resolved. Would’ve preferred if we got to see her learn why that wasn’t a helpful response.

This was my first graphic novel and I really enjoyed it. The illustrations were BEAUTIFUL! I love how each character had their own colour, but every page was still tied together by the same colour palettes. I especially enjoyed seeing different hair textures being brought to life by their movements, and styling & care processes. The characters were funny, loveable, and relatable. Such a wonderful book, that I’m glad I had the opportunity to read!

TLDR; 5 rating, I hope Davene finds someone who can help her, and Cookie :(((
Content warnings at the bottom. :)

While a super quick read, I think about it a lot still. I am very particular about the kinds of graphic novels, manga, and comic books I read because, much like audiobooks and their narrators, I can’t read books with pictures if I don’t like the art. The art in this one is very good.

Davene’s story resonated the most with me, as someone who has dealt with depression. Cookie didn’t handle that very well, so I hope Davene is able to get the help she needs. I loved the relationships between all the girls, and Cookie’s story is absolutely heartbreaking.

Reading this, especially between The Magnus Archives seasons, was a pleasant reprieve.

Rating: 5
Would I recommend? Yes, especially if you enjoy contemporary fiction, bright colors, and compelling and real stories.

Such a fun read! Its the story of four young black women navigating dating, mental health, family issues, and friendship, as well as keeping their tresses maintained and gorgeous. Its beautiful to see black women support one another and have fun. Its nice to see us portrayed as happy and carefree. No arguing. No baby-dady drama. No comparing each other. No racism. No violence. I loved the panel where they are on the subway and the white people aren't happy about them laughing and talking, but the only other black woman was perfectly comfortable and had no problem with them there. Its a lovely read and something that lift you up and makes you feel proud all around to be a black woman. Also, very sex positive and queer-affirming. Perfect for ages 16 and up.
