TLDR; 5 rating, I hope Davene finds someone who can help her, and Cookie :(((
Content warnings at the bottom. :)

While a super quick read, I think about it a lot still. I am very particular about the kinds of graphic novels, manga, and comic books I read because, much like audiobooks and their narrators, I can’t read books with pictures if I don’t like the art. The art in this one is very good.

Davene’s story resonated the most with me, as someone who has dealt with depression. Cookie didn’t handle that very well, so I hope Davene is able to get the help she needs. I loved the relationships between all the girls, and Cookie’s story is absolutely heartbreaking.

Reading this, especially between The Magnus Archives seasons, was a pleasant reprieve.

Rating: 5
Would I recommend? Yes, especially if you enjoy contemporary fiction, bright colors, and compelling and real stories.

Such a cute comic!!! I never knew I needed this until now! I loved the details of the one friend getting her hair braiding and showing the hot water, snipping the sides and the baby hair! There’s so much that goes into Black women’s hair and spans our entire lifetime. I only wish there were more stories and that I read it sooner!!

I loooooved this! The concept of exploring four women's lives anchored on their hair wash day was so original and worked really well. Also loved that all the women have different illustration styles because their stories are illustrated by different people.

Great depiction of how hair is central to women of color in terms of schedule and our everyday lives. Friendships were rock solid. Wish the mental illness story was handled  a bit differently, but it was true to life (as in sometimes that’s how friends respond initially)
