SPOILERS:

I loved the first travel sections so much, also I'm a history nerd so this book was kinda built for me. nothing is funnier to me than headless Dracula. DO NOT do as I do and literally read 70% of this in actual fear and then google Vlad Dracula bc his portrait is so unserious truly gave me life. on occasion I was scared in first half, ngl. I did not care about the characters but they were smart at least. this is a Dracula book and he appears LITERALLY for the last 75 pages, I was waiting man. he is properly evil, but also I could not help cracking up when he was like 'so I need a librarian' sir you have infinite time you are lazy. I did love this but THE ENDING HOW IS HE STILL ALIVE WHAT whyyyyy. absolute menace.

This is a really cozy read, er, listen, and the two narrators are both spectacular. Though now that I say that, I do think the male narrator's eastern European accents were slow and clumsy-sounding. And this book has a LOT of eastern European accents so be warned. But the writing is so good that for once I listened at 1.0 speed so I could savor every word. (I also suspect that the book is actually read at a normal speed, whereas books recorded today seem to be narrated excruciatingly slowly.)

The only reason I took off a star is because the book-within-a-book bogs things down so that not much happens for what feels like a long time. I have to confess that part of it might be me, as I listened to this so leisurely that that may have affected my perception of how much the book-within-a-book slowed things.

Also, the tattoo deal wasn't explained at all that I recall, and I think the 1970s adventures in eastern Europe were rushed — even the 1950s adventures too! —and both the Templar-like protector society and Helen's family lineage/importance were glossed over.

Can I add that I felt a lot of envy at how financially carefree the protagonists were? lol

Despite its length, I never felt that the book was moving too slowly. I was always interested, always intrigued, and everything other than what I have mentioned pays off well.

This book isn't scary, at least not for anyone who likes to read horror. There were only one or two places where I felt real worry for the characters.

I read "Dracula" for the first time when I was in 7th grade and wrote my first research paper (complete with footnotes--not parenthetical citations, but FOOTNOTES!) on vampires, so they have a special place in my heart. This book was great because it started with the premise that Dracula was alive and went from there.

So so awful. Spent 3 months trying to get through this book. Today I am halfway through and I admit defeat. Such a painfully boring book
