It’s really hard for me to turn down a book that’s got comparisons to Holes and Maniac Magee, those were kind of the books that defined middle school for me. Boys Of Blur by ND Wilson was not quite the page turner I was expecting but it was one of those books that as I was reading it, I could see how well done the book is. Wilson’s latest book, Boys Of Blur, has quite the interesting style and setting and is one that, although I did not fall in love with it, I feel perfectly comfortable recommending it to others.

A few days after finishing Boys of Blur, I still don't know how I feel about it. I started reading it thinking it was realistic fiction (not sure where this idea came from) and was totally thrown for a loop when supernatural creatures showed up and magic was suddenly a part of the plot. I did appreciate the quick pace of the writing and the characters were interesting, but I honestly have no idea what kind of kid I'd recommend this to.

As an adult, I can appreciate the beauty of the writing of this book, but as a teacher looking for books to recommend to students, I found it a little inaccessible for the students that I teach.

I'm saving my comments for the podcast on this one.

This one took me forever to finish. And man, it was weird. Beautifully written, but not at allllll what I was expecting. Don't be fooled by the small size and innocuous cover -- there's some stuff in here that I wouldn't recommend for kids under 10. 11 even.

Almost a three star book, but the last fifty pages or so really took it up a notch. Imaginative, brutal, and fast-paced...I think I'm going to get a copy of this for my classroom to lure the football players into a fantasy book.

Whoa but this book was amazing! The small town, Southern plantation setting has never been done like this, married with Beowulfian/Ancient American magic and monsters. Gorgeous, bold descriptions; potent themes; and really pretty terrifying stuff. Panthers, tree houses, fire, and *so* much mud.

I wish I'd known a bit more about this book before diving into it as it would have been helpful to my reading to know that it has a fantasy/mythology core. Because I didn't know that, it took a little while for me to realize what was going on. Once I did, though, I really enjoyed Wilson's tale - a modern-day retelling (of sorts) of the classic Beowulf. Wilson doesn't write uninteresting stuff.
