I am truly undecided about this book. I loved it and I didn't want to put it down! But, I also just don't know what else to say other than...What a freaking KILLER ending!!! I cannot wait to read the sequel!!!
Usually I don't enjoy dystopian books with supernatural elements (aside from the Shatter Me series), but this book was pretty good. There were parts that I had didn't love, but it's a book worth the read.
I can't seem to decide whether to give this novel 1,2,3,4, or 5 stars.
Why? you might ask. Well, here's why:
The things I loved:
1. the cover - okay, I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but damn, this one is gorgeous.
2. the blurb (the story plotline): it's unique and promising.
3. some scenes between Evie and Jack - what can I say - HAWT.
4. the last 20-ish pages.
The things I didn't love:
1. Evie - oh, come on. At the Before Flash part of the book, Evie is 15 years old - almost 16. (but really, really almost - a week or so)
I'm exactly the same age as her, so I guess you could say I can 'relate' to her. But. Evie has a boyfriend, and she's been with him, if I remember correctly, two years by now. (I can only imagine what love at 13 looks like, but nevermind)
And the biggest concern of their relationship: having sex. Honestly, if all young loves come down to that...
Also, I didn't like Evie beause she was one of the popular, rich kids at the school. She was kind of a snob and a biatch, in my opinion.
2. (referring to no.2 in the positive things) again, the blurb:
it mostly describes the second part of the book, After Flash. also, it says twenty-two teenagers are chosen... but where are those twenty-two teens? I only counted, like, half a dozen.
3. Jackson Deveaux. I'm sorry, I understand he's sporting the bad-boy attitude, but I thought he was often just mean and cruel. I didn't feel any sparks toward him, except when
4. also, there was this huge gap between the present and the past story, and it was a bit confusing, along with a few things about the Tarot cards
Overall, I just though of this book more confusing then not, although there was some good parts and things, which I loved, but it was just infuriating.
I do think I will read the sequel, though.

I struggled with this book. I struggled so hard. I wanted to like this book - in fact, I did like parts of it. But I just feel it had so much potential and didn't live up to any of it. But of course the cliffhanger ending has me wanting to know what happens in book two. Guess I'll be trolling for spoilers when it comes out.

It was a rocky start for me, I was in between hating and loving the heroine, ditto with the hero, and to be honest, I had low expectations when the beginning was loaded with cliches. But I don't know, I really liked it. It's not a different premise, I get that, pretty girl, bad boy, stuck together and forced to make it in a post apocalyptic world, but it kept me intrigued and I really liked going into this journey of this mousy, softy girl having to learn how to be strong and how to depend on herself. I especially loved the ending, it was unexpected. Also, as I've said earlier, the beginning was filled with cliches, however, as the story unfolded, I was riveted, immersed into this world, needing to know what will happen next. This, for me, is a testament to the authors storytelling, which means a lot in my book. Definitely cannot wait for the sequel.
2025 Reread
I did the audiobook for this rereading. I really liked the voice person who did it. The story was a lot of crush/hate, a lot of "I'm crazy? Maybe?", and "ok, I'm not crazy, actually?" I remember like the ending to this for some reason? But I didn't really like it this time around. It was a bit clunky. I wish there was something connecting the time she left Jackson and the others to when she visits the Hermit. I would've preferred that to the whole Hermit set up. Why was it important to get his Tableau? I have too many questions about this series. I'm hoping the recent one will have the answers

Disappointed. The concept was interesting and could've been done so well. Even the writing during the dark fantasy-like scenes was pretty good and I mostly enjoyed mostly. The characters though... unbearable assholes.
Also this author cannot write dialogue to save her life.
