I really, really enjoyed reading this book. But, having said that, I have to say it's more of a personal enjoyment instead of rec-everyone-this-book enjoyment. There were several problematic issues contained within that I just glossed over (or... liked, which is another thing all together), and I can't say that the plot really went places (and there's a cliffhanger, gah). But the writing is smooth and I just couldn't stop racing along as I read.
The beginning is a bit slow. It was interesting, but it dragged a bit, especially having read the summary and anticipating an apocalyptic event. I feel as if it could have been condensed down, but it did give some important building blocks for the plot. Evie, like the rest of the people who go to her school, is wealthy and privileged, used to things going her way and having life seem rosy and bright. But, as you find out right from the start, she has just been released from a mental institution, one she was confined to all summer, because she's been having hallucinations. All she wants is to be normal, though normality seems a bit turned on its head when a group of new students waltz into her school. They're poor and rough, from the wrong side of the bayou as it were, and one of them keeps watching Evie--and Evie keeps watching right back.
Then the apocalypse happens, and Evie's once bright life is turned into a grim one of survival, where she strives to survive in desolate surroundings as most of the population has died off. Her hallucinations have proved to be real and, well, she's set on a path she doesn't want to take, along with a boy who she fights with constantly and is incredibly attracted to.
The characters were fun. Evie was a decent main character, her only real problem being waffling over a few issues and inability to do much of anything in terms of survival (well, I guess these are major problems, aha). She keeps secrets (so much so that I want to shake her at times) and is constantly on guard around Jack, who she's drawn to. Jack is--Jack is problematic. And I love him. Um. He's coarse, he's violent (not to Evie, granted), he's controlling, and he's borderline alcoholic (or actually alcoholic--he drinks constantly, but it doesn't debilitate his abilities). He also cares for Evie--to the point where he's wrapping her up in silk while he gets battered around. He sucks at showing it though (and Evie sucks at picking up his cues), and there are so many misunderstanding between the two it makes me want to bash my head against the wall.
It's not exactly a healthy relationship. Evie's too dependent on Jack. Jack is, well, he's not a good person. He's very focused on a few things and anything outside of that small realm can probably be left to rot (I have weaknesses. One of them is traits like this. I never said these were good traits, however? Aha). He's wants in Evie's pants in a bad way and isn't afraid of showing it. Have I mentioned this isn't a healthy relationship? Even that said, I want them together so badly.
This is where I say that what I like in books probably do not translate to good things in real life. It's a good thing this is a book.
The plot is all right. It needed to be sped up a bit, and you don't get all that many answers to what is going on (and that cliffhanger. Bah). A good majority of it is a sort of get-from-point-A-to-point-B. Also, a good amount of it is wrapped up in Evie's secrets and her absolute inability to get any real answers (and so we don't get any real answers), as well as her disinclination to tell Jack what is going on. Even if, you know, the boy is trying to keep her alive.
The ending was a bit of a disappointment. Ignoring the cliffhanger, you get whiplash from Evie. The ending wasn't all that believable. I think the book started to go a bit downhill once you included more people than just Evie and Jack. The misunderstandings that arose, the tensions, they just served to rub me the wrong way a bit.
So, no, not perfect. I still really liked the book (barring a bit of the end). If I went for what the book probably deserved, it'd hover around a 2-3 star range. If I went for how much I liked the book, it'd be about 4-5. ...So I'm leveling it off at 4 because personal enjoyment trumps most other matters.

going from weak protected princess to the type of person who kills another by ripping them apart. It doesn't make all that much sense and doesn't feel like she could change that much in the span of a couple days. It's not an unwelcome change, but it rings falseSo, no, not perfect. It's the first book I've read in a while that I picked up and couldn't put down until it was finished many hours later. While it gets a lot of points for originality and being well written, I was a little put of by the lack of real depth in the majority of the secondary characters and a lot of the dialogue (especially in the beginning). I had a hard time reading a lot of the interactions between the two leads, not because it wasn't authentic but because the characters were both very stubborn and impulsive. As for the story, I'm really impressed. It's been a while since I've read a YA Fantasy novel and haven't had to sit through the same recycled characters and story lines. Apocalypse, special abilities, original creatures, the whole tarot thing... Solid.
This was so amazing! The story was so unique and it was perfect how the story was actually TOLD. Evie was a little annoying sometimes, because she wanted to be the good guy, but girl, embrace your darkness! That's what makes it fun!
I have very high Expectations for the next book, which I will start right now!

"Matthew was currently lying on a sleeping bag on the floor, whistling the Star Wars theme song, completely oblivious to our disquiet."
Relatable.
ohh boyy okay so I wasn't sure if I would like this book a lot and I am very conflicted. I liked some parts and I Hated others tbh.
Okay so let's start with things I liked:
-I liked Matthew as a character
-I liked the whole apocalyptic setting
-I liked the whole cards thing
-How it goes back and forth between Arthur with Evie and Evie's story that was pretty cool and it was cool how it eventually caught up at the end.
Now for the things I didn't like:
-The whole beginning in the school thing just that whole part I did not like the school setting, Evie's friends, Evie's boyfriend, and they are all rich??? what???
-Evie. Just her as a character honestly... She gets better towards the end but like,, she's just... ugh I can't even explain it lol
- Jackson. mannnn he is just rude and not a nice guy and *omg he reads books!11!! he's just misunderstood!1!* no. he is just not a good character ughhhh
- that whole thing with Selena and Jackson and Evie getting all jealous like why are you wearing all these fancy ass clothes in the middle of the apocalypse trying to get a dude to like you I just,,, dont get it,,,
anyways I probably didn't explain this too well and I want to read the next book bc I wanna know what happens but this book,, I would not recommend.

"She's so lovely, so fragile. Those hunted eyes. Those rosebud lips... they'll scream so prettily."
Spolied rich girl travel together with grumpy bad boy in a post apocalyptic world with magic, which we don't get a lot of information about.
Honestly a lot of flaws but I liked it. It was easy to read and good vibes.

I absolutely love this book. I love how Jackson would always, no matter how mad he is at her, protect her. I'm kinda mad though that Matthew wouldn't give her some of the answers that she craved.
This book had the worst male anti-hero of anything I can remember reading. The world building was fun and it had an interesting paranormal concept, but it was really hard to get past all the cave manish dialogue known as Jackson. And like so many YA books, there's plenty of forced (fake) tension created by miscommunication or lack of communication between characters. Evie is constantly guessing at the meaning of Jackson's actions but never directly asks about them, or clarifies her own actions that piss him off. Jackson's redeemable moments also don't make up for being abusively controlling and possessive, even for a rogue character. That being said... I HOPE and think it was the author's intention. "When he helps, he hurts." The ending was surprisingly stronger than I expected in the romance area, and didn't fall completely into the YA trap I thought it was headed toward. I'd love to know whether Evie becomes stronger emotionally before I continue the series though.
Poison princess is a must read series! It starts with a young girl who thinks she’s going crazy, a BA Cajun, and some interesting characters that come along. It’s the apocalypse and these kiddos got super human powers to fight against each other and to end the devastation. But who will win? And if they do win will it be worth it?
Amazing story telling, lots of great characters and Aw snap moments. 5 stars.
