Poison Princess

Kresley Cole

3.9 AVERAGE

an ok first book, but I doubt I will read the second one

This book was great. My experience with Kresley Cole has always been within the adult category so I was surprised when I came across this series by her. While I actually have never read any of her other books, this one caught my attention. I know nothing about the tarot, so while it's the main focus of the story (what with people representing the cards and all) it gets explained in ways that makes it easy to grasp the important stuff. The flow of the story was smooth. Going from the days before the flash and all the events leading up to how the book began. I liked the idea of the story being told, like it was quite literally being told to another. Evie's character was not someone I could relate to (or would even befriend for that matter) because she has always been rich and even if she didn't realize it, always acted better than others. Though, thru her travels with Jack, she does become a little more likable because she tries to think of him and what would make him happy. Or at least very least not mad all the time. For most of the book, she's a pretty useless girl and she knows it...but doesn't really do much to change that. Until the end. When she finally accepts herself for who she is and what she can do, it gives hope that she will continue to grow up. As for Jack, one can't help but feel sorry for him at times. He may be violent, quick to anger, and rough but he has a solid heart. Why else would he stay with Evie and go thru all he does for her? Promise to her mom or no, he truly takes on so much responsibility that he doesn't deserve to have heaped on his shoulders. His mood swings are enough to give one whiplash at times and he's never actually sweet, but I can see how Evie would find herself falling for him. Their fight after what happened by the pool almost makes one want to bang their head on the wall. Why couldn't Evie just talk to him? Explain why she freaked and just tell him how she was starting to feel for him? Which leads me to Evie keeping the whole tarot thing a secret from him. Couldn't she see that that was a huge fracture between them? It clearly hurt him that she wouldn't tell him and made it seem like she didn't trust him. How could she believe he would abandon her if she told him? I didn't particularly like Selena, but that was mostly because of her attempt to get between Evie and Jack. And having Matthew around probably didn't help either. His friendship with Evie was curious though
Spoilerif they have to kill each other until only one is left, how can he be so trusting and close to her?
.

The setup of the environment was well laid out and believable. I can see people acting the way some did in the book if an apocalypse of that sort were to actually happen. And the bagmen were a interesting addition to it. I am curious as to what ACTUALLY caused the flash, and hope to find out at some point.

Imma give this a 3.5 but a really solid 3.5

I really loved the idea and the setting of this book, but it took me FOREVER to get really invested. Also, the romance wasn't for me he was a little too possessive and ridiculous.

How can you use words to properly describe such a phenominal and enticing book?

I couldn't get enough of this daring page turner. I wasn't sure what to expect as each chapter went, enthralled as I realized that my mood changed many times. I could feel the need to yell at the characters and be riddled with the mysteries of what the Arcana was all about.

I was so into this books lure that I would forget that Evangeline was even telling about her experience before and after the Flash event and that while recalling her memories and figuring how to place herself with all that has happened.

Oh, and the end of this book. Oh, how the end of this book makes me yearn for more. I knew before I even finished the 3rd chapter that I just have to get the second book in this breath taking, mind numbing series.

Am I over exaggerating this book? No, I don't feel I am. It's been a long while and i have been waiting for a book that didn't just catch my eye because of the amazing cover or something small. The entire book drew me in with so much action, heartbreak and mystery that things just didn't fit if you skipped to the end.

Who do I recommend this too? Well I already urged my mom and though this is a teen novel I recommend it to those that enjoy paranormal, postapocalyptic and romantic stories. And if you like a main character that seems like a damsel in distress who whips around and turns out to be something more then this is I highly recommend it, though I think everyone should at least try this one at least once.

I'd like to start by saying that the ONLY reason I kept reading this is because a dear friend loves this series and recommended it to me. I was excited to read it because my friend told me about its ties to tarot and its general premise. The idea of the story is good. The execution literally had me cringing and asking myself repeatedly "did I really just read that?" And "did the author actually write that?" And "are any of these characters likeable?!"

The last two-ish chapters were by far the best in the book... so much so that I felt like I was reading something written by a different author than wrote the majority of it. Anyway. I hear the series gets better and because the last chapters were okay I am going to try out book two. Fingers crossed that it is better written and worlds more enjoyable.

I honestly kinda hated this for about half then realized I had gotten into it. The characters had to grow on me but they did. That said, I am not sure I will read more of the series
