DID NOT FINISH: 63%

Can't finish this one. It's too ridiculous. It's incoherent with too much senseless terror.

Wow. I can honestly say I have never read anything like this before.

This original fairy tale is about what would happen if a human was able to see into the fairy realm. It's disorienting and dreamlike and atmospheric and confusing as hell. But also incredibly beautiful.

Reading this book is like half-dreaming. You never know what's real.

The writing is stunning. This book is an ode to the seasons, to running wild barefoot, to the proverbial and very real wood.

I'm so glad I read this as part of the Carterhaugh book club!

I enjoyed the way the author wove the tale but I must admit, at times it felt a bit slow.
The main character Rois is interesting, I enjoyed her growth but there so so much unsaid in the story, so much “almost there” but not quite that it left me feeling a little unsatisfied throughout.
All in all, a decent read but not one I’d re-read.

Perhaps I suffered from not being well acquainted with the folk tale some of this novel is based upon--but I found it to be a book that tended to drag on. I wasn't a huge fan of the writing style. I wasn't particularly connected to the characters. The settings were well-developed and I think the ideas here were good but something just never connected with me. I just was not a fan from beginning to end.

Patricia McKillip's work (although, I admit, it was not this title that was recommended--this was just the first novel I could get my hands on) was recommended to me so I'll definitely pick up a different title and see if perhaps a different story connects with me more. This just wasn't my cup of tea. :(

Seriously?! This is one of those books where you can't wait to get to the end, only to be very disappointed with the results. Also, it was very hard to follow some parts of the story and I'd have to go back a page or two to figure out what I'd missed in some obscure part of a sentence. I would not recommend this book to anyone!

I don't think I've ever read such a short book before that somehow still felt like it dragged too much. I think my expectations were too high, because I've read The Forgotten Beasts of Eld and The Changeling Sea from this author, and instantly loved both of those. This one, though, was a bit too ephemeral for me. It was too much a book of atmosphere, and not enough a book of substance. I didn't like Rois's first-person perspective, and I also disliked the constant blurring between dream and reality. While this book didn't really work for me, I still think McKillip's writing is stunning, and I'm excited to continue reading more of her work, including the sequel to Winter Rose.
