2.25/5 ⭐️

The only reason this book got 2.25 stars instead of 1 is because of the last 100 pages.
This book was more about elites, fancy life , family backgrounds, riches than the plot. Sometimes I tended to forget that it has a plot.

Also I didn’t like the writing style it was one of a hell to get through with this book.

Will I recommend this book? NO,

Kevin Kwan's latest book starts out with college student Lucie attending a glamorous wedding in Capri with her cousin and chaperone Charlotte. She meets a new love interest George who is nothing like the men she's been interested in before--he's a bohemian surfer with an Australian accent but originally grew up in China. Years later, when she is engaged to another man, she meets up with him again in New York. Her values and goals are upended with the reunion with George, which she tries to fight.

When you read a book by Kwan, you can guarantee that you will read about fabulous locations, quirky and incredibly rich characters, and mildly humorous situations. Some of the places described make you sigh with envy. They move from Capri to New York to the Hamptons. It's all beautiful but somewhat vapid, but this book is not to be taken seriously--it's sheer cotton candy.

I liked the main character and saw the sparks between Lucie and George, but their reunion seemed a little unbelievable. Her fiancé is so surface and obsessed with social media that I found it hard to even see how she could have stayed with him for as long as she did. Quite a few of the characters are really humorous, and the wealth is over the top and meant to make you shake your head.

There were times where I felt the book dragged or was silly, and some of the relationships were too quick to come together or break apart. It's interesting that Kwan created a biracial character Lucie who struggles with her Chinese mother's background and her deceased father's WASP, straight-from-the-Mayflower background and how it affects her childhood and present day experiences. This was touched upon but could be explored further. However, this is supposed to be a fun book drenched with riches and gorgeous landscapes. You're supposed to be wowed and delighted by the scenery and story.

If you enjoyed the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, you will want to read this. Some reviews cite that it is too similar to that trilogy, but I didn't think so. It's different enough to be entertaining.

Skip bagian pertama nya
Bagian menarik ada part 2, sekitar halaman 150 ke atas
Khas Kevin Kwan, deskripsi baju/sepatu/properti lebih banyak (sekitar 60%) daripada cerita itu sendiri

Salty, sharp, mostly hilarious satire, but the romance/Lucie’s entire character was nonsensical
