Wanted to dnf but persevered.
Hated the fact that Milton Keynes was brought up, not a fan of that mixing with fantasy🤣
The only redemption this book had was the last 30 pages if that

I really couldn't get into the characters, none of them seemed to have any personality and Merry's grandmother just feels like another teenager, not a powerful coven leader

the premise seemed interesting but sadly, the back and forth between medieval times full of magic and present day just really threw me off (and I love books that shift between past and present)

"Being a witch is dangerous - but being in love is even worse"

I'm a sucker for witch stories.

A curse that has been with Merry's family for centuries. Only she can break it, but at a cost.

I found this to be an easy, pleasant read. All the characters were lovable.

I'm looking forward to reading book 2, "The Witches Tears"

Another book that I though I was going to like bite the dust.

I can't finish this at all. I'm not going to even rate it.

The premise of it being Sleeping Beauty but in the reverse with witches was so promising but it fell flat. What brothers me about this book is the villain motive into turning evil. In none spoiler way (haha) basically he was friendzoned ( I hate using that word so much) by the princess that he love (which he felt like he was entitled to since he saved her from an evil sorceress) but didn’t feel nothing but brotherly love to him becasue he never made his intentions since he left for a couple years. He blames her for leaning him on which she didn’t do at all and pretty much punish her by cursing her son to be his henchman for his evil plot to take people hearts who are in love when he turns 18. I was liking this book until that backstory come out and the book has went down hill from there. Also the main protagonist is kind of whinny since really don’t know how to do magic but her brother is pretty cool. ( Probably the one cool character besides the Grandma in this book. ) I found myself skipping pages and even skipping a chapter because it got boring after that backstory. So I don’t think I’m going to brother and finish this…

Another 3.5 really. I was unsure what to expect of this, as I'd seen a few raves but early on it wasn't drawing me in - and based on that I actually enjoyed it more I think! I liked that they had the courage of their convictions in the end, with killing dan and jack - though neither really got to me which is why it didn't get a higher rating. The dual character stuff was a little confusing, but sort of worked overall. I did like the overall fairytale theme and especially it being set in a modern world and affecting someone with recognisable concerns, as that's fairly unusual. But I think it just didn't go far enough to connect us to Merry - some of the other kids didn't like her, she's good at sport but that's basically thrown in as an aside before she stops doing them anyway, she controls her friend (um what, not cool!), and suddenly has a deathly fear of water that could have been better handled. Still a good and easy read, and these are minor niggles, but it stopped and good book being something great - modern but fantasy, sibling loyalty and bravery, cursed romance. I also like that merry didn't consider herself in love at the drop of a hat, even though she felt drawn to jack, and began to recognise it for what it was. Even with the true loves kiss stuff, it was just about on the right side of the line for me.
All in all, strong enough that I may read the sequel if it comes up cheap, but not so strong that I'll remember significant plot details in a couple of months.

Y'all I dunno why i keep thinking I'll like YA novels when i clearly struggle to rate any above a 2... I think it's because theyre easy to read and maybe more creative in their theming?? I also think YA is quite popular on goodreads and ugh whyyyy

Basically I just found everything to be a bit basic for me. The wizards motive for being evil was basic, the story was basic, the characters were basic......meh. It was all just so easily solved... too easily solved?? Also nothing happens for a good 350 pages of this book, they basically sit by the lake and crush on Jack. I just feel like this book didn't have much depth too it, a lot was repeated and it was pretty much laid plain out for you. I'm sure if you like witches and YA this'll be your thing, but unfortunately it just isn't mine.
I'm going to continue reading this series tho because I didn't hate it, and I have the other two books otherwise I wouldn't bother honestly.
