Books about the power of books and the costs of censorship are sadly very timely. However, this didn’t capture my attention the way I’d expected. The depiction of the titular character really grated. She was objectified and infantilised, not even deemed worthy of a name. And why identify her as Chinese when the book is set in China and all the characters are Chinese? The language felt stilted and unnatural, possibly the result of being written in French (not the author’s first language) and then translated into English. I was surprised at how much freedom the two who were being re-educated had. Since this is semi-autobiographical I assume it is accurate and my previous impressions need to be amended.
