I felt like there were bits and pieces of the story that caught my attention but the stuff in between wasn’t interesting to me at all and was hard to get through.

It was interesting because I learned some things about China I didn't know about but... The main characters are very dislikeable. The only relevant woman in this book doesn't even have a name, but we sure have descriptions of her body. There's character development but it's for the worse.
The best part of the book is the ending when the girl leaves them all and goes live her own life, really.

the book was good at first but then i just found myself waiting for it to be over.
i don't really understand a lot of the subtext, i think. but it was a very 'real' story in the sense that i cared about these characters and loved seeing all the facets of their personalities.
read the book for school.

rating 2.5 bc it was in between being an okay book and a book that i liked. i found some scenes very uncomfortable to read, especially the one told from an old character's perspective. it was too creepy.

A one-gulp must read, esp. for students with little to no knowledge (aka the whole western hemisphere) of China's cultural revolution.

Growing up in rural Minnesota means that what little diversity taught in school has nothing to do with anything of or related to the Asian continent. (I do mean that literally- as far as we knew both World Wars were solely with Germany -.-) And heaven forbid the topic of "Sex" should ever be mentioned- much less abortion...

If you were raised in a similar society I recommend finding some kind of online discussion page to really dive deep into the nuances of this book. It may be small but is packed with literary themes like censorship, education, and casteism. The beauty of this book is that even with little to no knowledge of the setting the reader can relate to the coming of age romance and the blissful escapism books can provide.
