Not very useful if you have wheat or corn allergies, most recipes have both. The author's message of taking back control/ quality of your food by growing and cooking your own food, and using condiments and seasonings from your heritage to flavor your go-to meals, is inspiring though. The reminder that both the cooking and gardening can be done socially to bring your family or community closer together is great too.

The recipes seem really interesting yet not overly complicated. I also love that he pairs the recipes with soundtracks, books, and films. I'm very excited to start trying these!

The BEST part of this book? Besides the delicious food recipes? The SOUNDTRACK!!! A (ridiculously awesome and connected) song for every recipe!!!! Now that is my kind of cookbook.

It's black history month, so I've been focused on consuming art and literature from Black Americans all month long.
Langston Hughes' "Let America Be America Again" floored me, as it does every time.
Ava Duvernay's documentary 13th stunned me speechless last night.
Romare Bearden gave me joy as I revisited his paintings in Charlotte.
There are more, and I'll talk about more, but tonight I'm enjoying this gem that a friend recommended to me.
I'm not vegan, but this book is chock full of delicious foods. Bryant Terry is brilliant in the writing because he lists a song at the heading of every recipe, providing a soundtrack for the meal. I love that.
Pick it up, warm the soul, fill the belly with good things.

One of my favorite cookbooks. Beautiful pictures, amazing recipes, and thoughtful stories, along with recommended music to listen to while cooking. All of his cookbooks are great.

I'm a newcomer to Bryant's cookbooks, and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to pick them up! Each one is a joy--generous, deeply thoughtful, inventive, and so funny! I love his new takes on easy-to-find ingredients like black-eyed peas, tomatoes, and peppers. And everything is so packed with seasoning! I'm excited I still have a few more of his books to explore.
