I liked this one but not as much as Vol 1.

I liked most of the art. The only two that I didn't like much were Angels We Have Seen on High, I enjoyed the story just not the art and the last comic The Dust Waltz.

My favorite comics from this one were A Stake to the Heart, The Queen of Hearts, and Ring of Fire.

While I still thoroughly enjoyed the art and stories, I agree with most other reviewers on being confused by how drastically it jumped around in time. While the first volume was a pre-history of Buffy, this volume continues that and then jumps right past season 2 with no warning at all.

These omnibuses are so hard to rate because the art and storytelling quality change so drastically from one story to the next. "A Stake to the Heart" by Fabian Nicieza with art by Cliff Richards did most of the heavy lifting this round, with its affecting premise and horrifying psychological demons, while Hector Gomez's awful 90s-style superhero contortions in his art ruined what could have been another fun apocalypse in "The Dust Waltz". I guess the quality spikes (ha) and valleys make an omnibus much like a season of Buffy. 3.5 stars would have done it, here.

I definitely enjoyed this volume as well as the first one. In particular, I appreciated the stronger presence of diverse female characters, such as the slayer Kendra and the formidable sisters Lilith and Lamia. I think Volume 1 could be read and appreciated by people who have not watched the TV show. Since this collection does not flow quite as linearly, it would help for people to have seen the first 3 seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. For me, this volume filled in important gaps of Buffy's story, such as her parents' divorce, her sister Dawn, and what happened during Spike and Dru's trip to Europe. The artwork is beautiful, and the book is a fun and engaging read. Also, the female characters are drawn realistically, which I appreciate.

This collection was hit and miss for me, but overall not terrible. I felt there were some moments when I didn't think the characters connected at all and that was probably my biggest let down. I mean I've never seen Buffy lift weights at the pool or make a game of swatting flies blindfolded, MacGuffins I call you out. There were also some pitfalls in the art, although I must admit I enjoyed the variety (Angels We Have Seen on High, beautiful colors). My favorite was probably A Steak to the Heart, I liked that Dawn was included and the stuff about Joyce and Hanks divorce was pretty moving- bonus the art was awesome! I also enjoyed Paint the Town Red although I'm not sure Spike and Dru were portrayed as well as they were in Queen of Hearts which was super good. Ring of Fire and Dust Waltz were ok although I really didn't like some of the art in Dust Waltz it just didn't seem to fit to me.
