What did I actually read? Did I need to be on drugs to understand this book? It was like the Bridge to Terabithia and Alice in Wonderland gone wrong. I will not recommend this book to anyone… It was just horrible!

I got this book for free many years ago at a music festival. I was intrigued by the cool cover art and the description of the story on the back. It also came with a CD (which I have since lost). I was excited to read this, but never got around to it and it sat on my shelf for a long time. I knew eventually it would be a fun read.
Naw, I was wrong. This book was very hard to follow and understand. I liked the idea of two kids exploring a forest, and the way their imaginations really create this wonderful magical world. And I enjoyed the contrast of their magical world with their unhealthy home lives. The author does a pretty good job of capturing the innocence and magic of being this young.
But mostly this book was a confusing read. The author really struggles with making a coherent story. He will go on long tangents of unnecessary and overly flowerly/metaphorical descriptions of things, while simultaneously not explaining the important parts, so I often found I had no idea what the author was talking about. Sometimes I thought he was just really high and trying to write pretty words.
The story just gets harder and harder to understand, with dawn and dream gods and shivers, strange story lines that I could not really understand, descriptions of things that didn't really make any sense. The story is weird, which I can enjoy if the writing is clear, but it was too hard to know what the hell the author was talking about about 60% of the time.
Additionally, the end wasn't very good in my opinion. It was very sudden and jarring, and just didn't make the story worth the read. Meh. At least I finally read it.

It was my sincerest hope that if I just stuck it out, in the end I'd like this book. Hell no!

The book delt with heavy topics through the perspective of kids and I think it was really well done. Although there were parts I felt were a bit concerning, over all it was a very cute topic and executed very well!

The book managed to arrive to Portugal. My step-mother brought it from US, since she received it for free on a campus. It sat on my shelf for 2 years. The writing is a bit poor and there are some parts that simply doesnt make sense. The writer attempts to create 6-year-old characters with adult behaviours - he failed flatly. It's a not-changing-life light reading.

I was first intrigued by this book's magical premise. Then I was intrigued by the conflicting reviews people had given it. So, unable to resist, I had to read it myself.
I want to feel bad about the 2 star review, but that's just what it is. This books tries to be magical and exciting, but it just doesn't have any impact. There just isn't enough detail or intrigue to keep me satisfied. The parts in the forest just seemed convoluted, and the most exciting parts were the ones about their home lives. The ending seemed too abrupt, didn't make much sense, and was a bit of a downer. Ah well, live and learn.

Was excited for this book based on the teaser thinking it was going to be a similar/darker version of Bridge to Terabithia, but it didn't land that way. I think they were going for a creepy/surreal vibe but honestly it was just too abstract and confusing, and at times it pulled me right out of the story. The dialogue doesn't really match the age of the characters (6yrs old) and them getting naked totally wasn't necessary to the story . I wanted to like the book and I was hoping for some payoff as the stakes seemed to get more dire but the end was anticlimactic at best.
