I distinctly remember reading this book when I was a kid, but outside of that, have literally zero memory of this book. Which is a shame, because this book was wonderful. I rushed through it in a day, could hardly bear to put it down, and have already checked out the next three books in the series.

I absolutely love Daine—she is everything that I wanted to be when I was a kid, especially in terms of her ability to speak with the animals.

My one complaint with this book is that after reading Pierce’s later books first, it is really easy to see where she was grown an author and this one wasn’t as polished as her later books are. But it’s really only a mild gripe—I love Pierce and all of her writing, and I don’t think she ever gets enough hype for all of the strong female characters and insanely creative worlds she has written over the last thirty years. She truly is a master of fantasy and I can’t repeat that enough.

I got to listen to this as an audio book, and that really brought it alive. There was a full cast for all the different characters, which really added to it. I enjoyed the story and the characters. I liked how there were so many female characters who get to live full lives in various ways, working and raising children and just being able to contribute to the good of their country in whatever they're good at. It's a fun book for just about any age and one many will enjoy.

I was feeling a bit depressed, so I thought that reading a nice adult coming-of-age fantasy would be the perfect solution. And this is the series by Tamora Pierce that was next on my to-read list. Seemed perfect, and I was pretty much right. This, more than any of the other books by Tamora Pierce that I've read, reminded me of Mercedes Lackey's earlier Valdemar books. Poor bereaved and bereft Daine is taken in, discovered to have amazing talents, and ultimately saves the day with them, after a bit of angst. It was a very sweet book, and I enjoyed it for what it was. I wouldn't expect anything too deep from it, but if you're in the mood for a comfort read with a sassy heroine and her found family, then this should be perfect for you.

The nostalgia did not hold up for me and that honestly makes me a bit sad

After the death of her family, 13 year old Daine get a job as assistant to Onya, Horse Mistress of the Queen’s Riders, as she has a talent with animals. However, when she rescues a hawk from Stormwings, a type of immortal, she discovers she has a type of magic which could affect all of Tortall. This is one of my favourite fantasy series, as I love how absorbing the story is and how brilliant the characters are. I wish I had read it when I was a young teen as Daine is quite a role model and generally a good person. I would recommend Wild Magic to anyone who like YA fantasy.

Compelling read, hard to put down. Regular flaws of middlegrade/YA, except no terrible romance plot (main char only 13).
