I wish I had discovered this serie when I was younger. 11 year old me would have absolutely DEVOURED this series. I would have been head over heals for this book. A young girl that can speak to animals and gets a new found family filled with cool people? HELL YEAH. Brb recommending this serie to all the preteens I can find.
Side note: why do all the good fantasy books always have the most atrociously ugly covers??

I like Tammy's writing, and I like her sense of humor in real life when I've seen her on panels.

I loved the Alanna series when I was younger and wanted to relive some great Tortallan  fantasy. This doesn't disappoint. The world the magic the characters are like an unforgettable friend that no matter the length of time you don't interact when you do it's easy and fun and fantastic.

This was my favourite series as a young teen, so I was super delighted when I picked it up for a re-read 15-20 years later and found that it was still as charming as I'd hoped. I've carried my copies for that many years, and let me tell you, they are pretty well-worn and loved. I'm also pretty sure that Numair kicked off a decades-long fondness for his very specific character type, so... good job to this series, I guess. I have to credit you that, Tamora Pierce!
