This is my favorite Tamora Pierce series. The characters are well written and deep. The plot line is interesting and keeps you wanting to read more. I loved the characterization. You fall in love with all the characters and wish you could truly meet them and get to know them. I love the relationship between Daine and Numair. Numair is her mentor. The one who teaches her everything. How to trust, how to heal others, herself, and animals, how to make friends and a lot of other stuff. The creatures are also fun. You get the perspective of animals and how and why they do things. Even immortals and mythical creatures are interesting and fun in this book. I love Daine and how she grows up. The fighting is exciting and you understand where everyone is coming from and thinking of in any given time.

I don't know what it is about this book that made it harder to get into than the Song of the Lioness or the Protector of the Small series, but it was hard to get into this one. It took me several days to listen to it, and even then, I had a hard time following Dain's story. She's angry at the world and angry at everyone, even if she is being taken care of by some of the best people in the country of Tortall. She is being trained, and she refuses to take anything the older mages to heart, and ends up trying to kill herself (accidentally, to be sure) several times throughout the book. You just want to shake her.

I think I'll take a break from this one and move back to the Protector of the Small series.

Daine is my favorite character in this universe. She's young, she's spunky, she's everything I wish I could have been when I was a kid, with the addition of having the gift with animals. Just...yes
