Osric Mordaunt  and  Aurienne Fairhrim are about as opposite as you can get. She is a healer and he is an assassin for hire. There is love at first sight and then there is this...Hate at first sight.  I love when there is witty banter between characters but this was just insulting each other until the other gives up.  I read some background and the author said she is such a fan of the slow burn and that was what she wanted for this book...well mission accomplished.  It was so slow it was damn near going backward!
They were insulting each other up until the last page basically.  It was on that last page any inkling of any true feelings were even hinted at.  Will I read the second one in the duology when it comes out...probably just for closer.  A lot was left feeling incomplete.

I'm not totally sure what I was expecting but this was a fun book! As someone who doesn't read Dramione or HP fanfic I'm sure there are lots of easter eggs that I missed, but this sort of gaslamp magical UK fantasy world was interesting. The terminology was silly and I love tongue in cheek books where the author is obviously having a good time and then out of nowhere I'd be hit with some beautiful and profound prose. At the same time there were a lot of SAT words (for lack of a better term) which did fit with how seriously the main characters take themselves. They're both extremely good at what they do, which unfortunately happens to be opposite ends of the spectrum of healing (FMC) and killing (MMC) people. I did enjoy their dynamic where they would meet, insult each other nonstop, have a brief interruption of vulnerability where she tries to heal him, and then right back to vitriolic banter until next time. I am interested in the plot about a plague designed to affect poor children (a little too close to reality right now) and the magical order political intrigue, so I'm hoping there's more world-building in the next one, but you should mainly read this if you're into enemies to lovers slow-burn where he falls first.
