This book was definitely not what I expected. If you're thinking of a tourist visiting South America and going on a cute little adventure, think again. The main character, Lily, is fully immersed in the jungle of Bolivia and the author pulls no punches.

Lily was an unlikeable character, for me. Every time she had to make a decision between choosing one path or another, she always seemed to choose the wrong one. I couldn't relate to her at all. But after reading her backstory and trying to put myself in her shoes, I may have made some of the same desperate decisions as she did.

Although this story sells itself as an adventure story, much of the story is filled with lush descriptions of jungle and village life. It's not until the last 3/4 of the book that the plot really picked up and I wished that the action had been distributed more evenly. The climax and ending of the book, however, made up for some of the parts I didn't like.

I don't know why this book has been marketed as a thriller. It's a compelling, almost coming-of-age story with some suspenseful parts, but not a thriller.

I kept waiting for this book to pick up and become the thriller it was described to be. It took me a while to get through it and I am disappointed to say I was never hooked.

The main character was whiny and naive and I didn’t notice much character growth.

2.5 stars Beautifully written descriptions of the jungle and the tenuous balance between life as death there, but the rushed final quarter of the novel was like wtf? as it devolved into a B-movie action flick. A disappointing turn of events after feeling invested in the story...
