Gripping storyline, better than the movie, of course. The movie actually did a decent job, though. Dashner did a nice job with describing emotions of characters, using vivid comparisons, and 'showing' instead of telling with plenty of details. Since it is a teen literature book, some parts of the language are a bit simplistic and repetitive.

A good read but not amazing.
The world-building is okay, but could have been fleshed out more.
The special lingo the kids use feels forced and doesn't ring true (everyone calls each other shank, and poop is klunk, that sort of thing).
The ending was rushed and disappointing and a death occurs at the end which feels like the character only existed to bite the dust in the end.
Overall it was a fun book, it was fast and lots happened.
The ending was an anti-climax so I'm not excited to start book two. Maybe next year.

This book starts slow and is pretty frustrating at the beginning. It doesn’t really ramp up and is mostly world building until about 50%.

Throughout the book we follow Thomas, a kid who’s been dropped into a complicated maze and had all of his past memories wiped away. He and a bunch of other boys must figure out how to escape and get back to what they assume will be families missing them.

It’s frustrating if you have a hard time with miscommunication tropes. The characters that have been there a while are constantly telling Thomas to stop asking questions. Thomas frequently dismisses important pieces of information as not important.

3 stars because it’s leaps and bounds better than Divergent and because the ending made me want to read the next one.
