The dialogue was painful. The bullying was miserable to read. There were loose ends around his parent’s divorce. I am giving it a 2 because his bully said some mildly interesting stuff when confronted.

a surprisingly moving read. at times deeply cynical, constantly empathetic, this short little novel gave me a lot more to chew on than i expected. kawakami is quickly becoming one of my fav authors.

i finished this book in july 2024. this book was such a wonderful read, despite some dark topics in there. mieko's writing style is so amazing. definitely reccommend

I don't really know what to make of this book.
On the one hand there are very enyojable dialoges between the two main characters but on the other hand there are these very heavy bullying scenes.
These passages are also the reason that this book took me like a full week to read because some scenes were hard to stomache.
And I have to confess that I cannot for the life of me, understand the ending of chapter eight.
PS: The masturbation scenes jump scared the shit out of me everytime

I think this is one of those books where you connect with it so much more depending on what point you're at in your life when you read it. I almost feel bad for disliking it, but it just wasn't for me.
