This was my first time reading a horror story with a documentary-like setting, which intrigued me a lot. The book started well with its creepy storytelling, making me feel uneasy, especially when I read it at night in the dark. However, the writing style turned me off because I sometimes had a hard time pinpointing who was talking. Additionally, because it was set up as a documentary, the story could be quite wordy. While I understand the need to explain or narrate the situation, the writer seemed to drag the story out with unnecessary dialogue, which sometimes made me bored.

The ending disappointed me a lot; it felt rushed and unsatisfying because I wanted more from the story's conclusion.

Nevertheless, the book managed to keep me entertained, although it took me a long time to finish it. I'm not sure if I would read another book by this author, as the writing style can be a major turn-off for me.

I found rhis book in a reel titled "books that actually scared me". When I found out that it is about a murderous cult AND my local library had the ebook, it seemed like fate. I expected to eat this up. I am obsessed with cults, it's the only true crime topic I enjoy.

But then... it took me about two months to even finish the book. I had to force myself to finish the second half. The premise is really good and the plot and explanations were interesting, and there were some creepy scenes in the beginning (though not THAT scary tbh). I could have dealt with the unlikeable characters and the fact that this doesn't even come close to passing the bechdel test, but it just dragged on and on, the pacing is terrible, the chapters endlessly long and there is a lot of tell instead of show.
Maybe I would give a much shorter book by the author another try.

Something about this book really creeped me out and got under my skin. I have a feeling that I’ll be thinking about this one for awhile. It was long, but I felt well paced and like something important was happening at all times. My only real complaint is the
ambiguous ending
, but I’m not that mad at it.

a slow, tense read. definitely builds up in tone and suspense; and being written as a pseudo-film/documentary about a defunct cult that's still haunting its 'apostate' members in more ways than one was unique and helped to break up the main mystery being explored into digestible pieces. the tone really shifts in the last 100 or so pages, and a lot of plot points are kind of crammed together at once, but everything before that is solid enough to carry the chaos that was the ending.

I really enjoyed the first two thirds of this book but the last third just wasn't for me. I felt like it let the book down a little
