i do not like long books. i know this about myself and i try to push thru because maybe i’m just lazy (i am) but also no book needs to be more than 400 pages. truly. this book did come to a conclusion though a weird one but could’ve somehow been over after filming and i would’ve been more satisfied because by page 350 my ass was draggin’. i do love cults but am less into the paranormal - though this novel intermixed history into it which did make it kind of a fun, different read but BOI it was too long.

Sigh... this was such a let down. This has been on my TBR for forever, when I finally got the audiobook version. It is entirely too wordy, I was bored for a solid 2-3 hours of listening. The main character was annoying.

I read this for my August book club and I was a little let down by it. I had chosen this one because I kept seeing it recommended as one of the scariest books ever. I thought the beginning was pretty good and I loved learning about the cult, but at least half of the book is spent after all the filming is done. I think this could have been a lot shorter, and the ending ended up feeling like an action movie. I'll still give it 3 stars though because I think the premise is super interesting!

I loved this book, and I loved The Ritual. Really, honestly horrific.
But I really hope he writes a book one day where he doesn't use the f-word gay slur. Unnecessary every time he uses it.

Last Days follows documentary filmmaker Kyle as he delves into the sinister history of a cult. I absolutely loved (and hated) the creatures in this novel. The emaciated, mottled, human-like forms that run on all fours, smell of death, and emit swine-like screams absolutely kept me awake. Something about the description of a porcine figure in ecclesiastical garb checked all the boxes of horror for me. Nevill's writing is relentless in its ability to evoke dread and discomfort.

I have to give props to Nevill not only for his ability to create a cult, but for learning the (very technical) ways of filmmaking, playing homage to Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch. Where other found-footage horror novels fail, Last Days shines.

My only qualm is that it started to get unnecessarily lengthy towards the end, which stifled some of the story's momentum. However, I think this adds to the bleak despair we feel alongside Kyle as Max rambles and we descend into madness with him.

Read this with the lights on. 4.5 stars
