I enjoyed this. The smut is definitely a 10/10. But there was not much else to this story for me then the smut. The rest of the story fell flat for me. I don't see why Jared played such a huge part in this story if no conflict with Jared would take place.

I’ll finish my review later, but also.

What the fuck is up with the son of the FMC—a grown man—never defending his own mother against his father’s mistress?

And it never gets resolved? The son is still an asshole who never defends the mother who underwent cervical cancer but still had him? Who raised him and endured the mistress?

Yeah, boy bye.

Byyyyyyyyyye.

I’m back.

This is could’ve been an interesting read.

* Older FMC x Younger MMC ✅
* Black, accomplished FMC ✅
* Latino MMC who loved FMC first ✅

But my GOD I’m let down.

This is a story all about how the FMC’s life got tripped flipped upside down. And I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there. I’ll tell you how the fucking FMC never gets her dues and how it’s not fair.

FMC is an accomplished, widowed 50s Black woman who is trying to bounce back not just from her trauma as a cancer survivor but a survivor of infidelity, empty nesting, and the death of not just her husband but what she knew as her family. She receives very little support from her son, who forces his mother to be in the presence of the mistress and never once defends her, nor is anyone woman enough to let him know he’s a fucking asshat for doing this to his mother.

MMC is a Latino 30s architect who loved the FMC when he was a mere uni student. He and the FMC’s son did see the now deceased father, but they kept quiet—ad you do. And the MMC lusted and loved the FMC for so long, yet not enough to provide evidence of her having a cheating spouse and not enough to defend her when her own son never had the guts to do.

The son begs the FMC for his nuptials to be at the family home, forcing his mother to endure the judgment of her ex MIL and her late cheating husband’s mistress, and he never defends her. Of course the mistress—Jojo—can’t do any wrong since her son—the FMC’s son’s half brother—is all the son cares for, as if his own mother doesn’t matter.

Wait she does.

He has the MMC watch his mother for the wedding because his poor mother doesn’t have a date.

The buildup was so good and delivered. Sexy Older woman/younger man I HAVE to know the rest of the story.

Tomás Martinez is heading back to South Carolina from Chicago where he's a wunderkind architect to be the best man at his best friend's wedding. It would all be fine if going back didn't mean having to see Darcy MacFarland, jared's mother. You see, he's had a major crush on her and now, in his still thirties, he's still comparing every woman to her. Just the thought of seeing her sets his body on fire. To make matters worse, Jared assigned him as "mother of the groom concierge" - as she has no date for the wedding, he's to be her date, keep her company, dance with her, see to her every need. Yeah, that's going to be torture.
When Darcy sees "Little Tommy", she's kinda shocked that she's not seeing the young man who used to stay over at the "garçonière" above the garage - he's all man now and looking at her in a way that's making her feel young and vibrant. As a sub, he's making it obvious that he'll be "completely at her service". All she has to do is... say yes.
Get ready for your ears to be singed with this audiobook! Oscar Reys is officially the king of #sadtorturedboys and I'm here for it. His melodious, raspy voice is perfect for Tomás and one "hermosa" and you are ready to be scraped off the floor. Mari is amazing as always as Darcy, a woman in her fifties who, though secure in herself, can't believe that her son's hotter than sin best friend really wants her,
Second 2024 release of the Audio in Color grant recipients, this audiobook proves how these initiatives are important! It brought Tomás and Darcy to our ears and it can bring so many more stories! I can't wait for the audiobook for the second part of the duet!
Representation:  black author, black heroine, latine hero, older woman/younger man
Possible triggers: mentions of cheating, dealing with a husband's second family

I basically read this on a whim as it was pretty far down on the TBR, and wow, I really made the right decision. In the very first chapter,
SpoilerMMC is jerking off in an airplane bathroom
and in case you can't tell from my shelves, that is my jam. Aside from the amazing sexual tension and self-pleasure scenes, this was just a really cute story with very likeable characters. Short and sweet and HOT, loved it!

Jared was the worst boyfriend/fiancee/husband. If he existed in real life I would be telling Brandi to run down the aisle AWAY from him. What guy relies on his friends to find and choose birthday and Christmas gifts for his girlfriend? Doesn’t plan his own wedding or honeymoon? Cheats on his financee the night before the wedding with strippers? His character was just so immature and selfish. This is a genuine quote from the book about Brandi’s relationship with her future husband:

“She knew he wasn’t the thoughtful type and was totally okay with the fact that he relied on me to help him buy her birthday and Christmas gifts. She’d even shared her bridal Pinterest board with me when they started talking about marriage to make sure he bought the right ring.”

Why would anyone be totally okay with that nonchalant attitude? Seriously does that sound like a guy who cares about his relationship? It didn’t seem like Jared knew about or cared about Brandi at all.

So yeah Jared was bad enough to Brandi but just as awful to his own family. His mother Darcy plans his entire wedding for him at her home and he can’t be bothered to so much as make sure his friends don’t get drunk and throw up all over the place. I thought that was horrifying but then I read how his father cheated on Darcy with a mistress for years and yet he invited the mistress and bastard son to the events his mother put together. Who the hell does that? And when they show up hours later does he call out the disrespect and stand up for his mother? Nope. Like were we actually supposed to root for this guy and his marriage to Brandi? I’m so glad that wasn’t the main focus of the story but it ruined the book enough that I wasn’t able to stomach reading the whole thing.
