I am really not a fan of the books about kids (or cats) who are in love with the character who is mean to them, or characters who show they like someone by being mean. This trope isn't just overdone, but it's damaging. We shouldn't be telling kids that this is a good way to show affection, or that the person who is awful to them is worthy of their affection. Kitten is eventually nice to splat, but most of the book is just her being awful to him and him pining after her anyway. No thank you.

Oh dear. Kitten (a lady cat) regularly beats the shit out of Splat (a boy cat) because she likes him. Of course! Ughghghgh. I'm grateful it wasn't the other way around, but normalizing relationship violence is not cute or funny. Also there's a long sequence where the two male cats one up each other with displays of their love for Kitten - during this exchange neither bothers to ask Kitten what she thinks of all this "love." Stahhhhpp.
Also when I asked the kids why they thought Kitten didn't seem to like Splat one little girl offered, "Maybe because he's the only black cat." *Headdesk* *Dies a little inside*

My kids have an odd fascination with cats, so this is perfect for them. Fun valentine's day story about a cat and his crush. The illustrations are super fun and the story is good too, funny and even a little deep. Love it.
Received this as a Valentines Day present a few years ago and just read it again. It's four-star adorable, but I decided to add an extra star in a meager attempt to balance out the absurd one- and two-star alt-left reviews. (Or maybe alt-right? It's hard to be sure...not easy to tell the whiny-ass babies apart anymore. It all starts sounding like waa waa waa...! to me.)
Very cute valentine's day book for storytime Splat likes Kitten but he makes him nervous. He writes a valentine for her but throws it away. Kitten reads it and turns out that she wrote one for splat
Just a simple, fun story of boy likes girl. Boy thinks he isn’t the cat’s meow or is he? I enjoyed seeing the journey that Splat went on from grooming himself in the morning, to knocking down Kitten by mistake, to competing with Spike about who likes Kitten more, to watching Splat feel down trodden and then learning everything isn’t what it seems. This is a book full of heart.
Rob Scotton does a brilliant pairing of descriptive, short text with colorful, funny illustrations. I love how you can see the individual cat hairs.

This book was cute! I read it at work during a slow period at the register. Super cute illustrations
A cute little story about how children act when they "like" each other - with a happy ending where the vain obnoxious kitty doesn't get the girl - but the nice one does!
Splat the cat has a crush on Kitten. He writes a card, but a bully (who also likes Kitten) outshines him. Kitten reads both cards, and even though the bully's card is bigger, Splat's is better.
