Not hard to imagine how original and thought-provoking this story was in its' time. If you are to read it, I may suggest watching Carl Sagan's concept of "Flatland" on youtube, as it gives a bit of background and helps to explain the idea of a fourth dimension for those who may not have knowledge of physics.

This story does not disappoint. The first I've read by Wells, but certainly not the last, this short novel was a wonderful introduction to his fantastical musings. From the first page, I was hooked and struggled to put it down.
The plot is amazing. Wells creates a completely unbelievable and improbable story and challenges his readers to accept it through the scientific lectures and musings of The Time Traveler. The journey through time is almost convincing as The Time Traveler gives his reasoning and explanations of the evolution of the human race, the destruction of humanity and the changes that take place in our world. Wells informes and speculates; he describes musings on scientific theories and philosophical ideas while speculating the future not only of humanity but of the world as he knows it. Despite the difference between our modern world and the world Wells lives in, this story continues to be thought-provoking.
The story is recounted by the Time Traveler to his dinner party guests and is explored by the reader through the second-party narration of one of the guests. This adds an element of reality as our eyes are those of a character who critiques the improbability of the story and struggles with the potential reality. We have a somewhat unreliable narrator who creates an interesting gaze for the audience to judge and interpret. By not attributing a name to The Time Traveler, Wells has created a character that could be anybody and gives the impression that this character is a real man whose identity is being hidden on purpose.
The characters were very typical for the time, and the observations made by The Time Traveler critique Wells’ world as well as our future as a species. It is extremely interesting to view these observations, interpretations, and musings from a future perspective.
This book is, simply put, absolutely delightful. The writing is very charming, complimenting the piece very well. The story is completely improbable but fascinating, and the characters are very realistic. This exciting piece is a well-known classic for good reason, and I believe anyone could enjoy this piece, whether or not they are fans of science fiction, due to its charm and length as a short story.

A scientist has mad a time machine. He tells his dinner guests what he found in the future. I liked this better than the single other book by H. G. Wells that I've read (The War of the Worlds). But like that other book I think it would have interested me a lot more if I had better knowledge of its cultural and litterary context. Said another way, H. G. Wells was exceptional in his time and has since been largely overtaken. This make his books most interesting as a reflexion of how people thought in his time, about the future, about science.
The premise of what happened to humans in the future is obviously unrealistic, which makes it weaker and less interesting than it could have been (divergences of that magnitude could only really have happened if humans were put in different and mutually inaccessible environments), but it is an interesting thought experiment. There is some unpleasant talk about "savages", a single female character that is even worse than the average femal characters in adventure books from the 1800s tend to be, and the main character is an arrogant, unpleasant man who I'm fairly certain isn't meant to be. I found some parts of this to be genuinly interesting and other parts to be genuinely creepy (a good thing).
Read this if you like others H. G. Wells, I suppose, or if you are passionate about the history of sci-fi as a genre.
