A fun but disturbing novella about a scientists journey into the future on his time machine. Unlike a lot of other sci-fi books delving into time traveler that tend to stick with the hundred to thousand year journey forward, this guy travels to the year 802,701 A.D. Essentially he has landed in a dying earth where there are essentially two races of people (using the term loosely here). The weirdly apathetic, fragile Eloi who live above ground in a veritable paradise and the beastly underground-dwelling Morlocks. Wells does an amazing job of describing this world and its inhabitants. I enjoyed the protagonist's journey from idealism to a sense of despair or cynicism towards the future of humanity. I also liked the old fashioned "gather around friends" method of story telling. I imagine at this time many explorers were coming back from their journeys to the north and south pole and providing lectures and narratives of their events. Most of the novella is told to us through the Time Traveller's memory of what happened to him on his journey. I always find methods of story delivery to be quite fascinating.

A short, quick read. Pretty interesting concept especially when it first came out in the 1800’s. You wont regret giving this a chance.
