This retelling of The Steadfast Tin Soldier struck my heart just so. There's such earnestness and resignation contrasted with vapidness and concern for appearances. This novella had believable character change and in all was a satisfying, sweet story.

Short & sweet enemies-to-lovers(esqe) story!

The relationship felt a bit rushed (due to story length) but the tender themes were beautifully executed!

Loved this novella! I didn’t want to put it down and read it in less than a day! Sometimes with novellas I feel like the love story is rushed and underdeveloped but I didn’t feel that way at all with this book. My only complaint would be that I wish it was a full book so I could have enjoyed it longer! Great clean historical romance, can’t wait to read the authors future books.

4.5 stars. I had never heard of the fairytale this story is based on - "The Tin Soldier" - so I had to find a summary to read beforehand. It was fun to look for the similarities in this story. I loved seeing the growth of the heroine.

It was a sweet little novella that was a decent reimagining of one of my favorite fairytales.

This is the book that drew me to the book series. The summary grabbed me and I have to say it was my most favorite of all the retellings of fairy tales. This is The Steadfast Tin Soldier. I liked Hawks's writing style and how she sucked you almost instantly.

Lieutenant Robert Brenton returns from war a very changed man...he has a prosthetic leg. well, actually he is trying on a new implement - a wooden foot, connected to his prosthetic leg. He typically has a peg-leg or something akin that clearly show she is missing a lower limb. he hates it and he hates having it because it causes him to stand out in society. He is making a massive return to his old haunts about town. Even to his old lady love of childhood, Holly Addison.

I hurt for both of these characters and the way Hawks sketches them both so that you not only feel their old feelings upfront but that they are both in pain and heartache. Something they could both stop if they ended their stubborn ways. Robert believes Holly cannot want him the same since he has vastly changed...and Holly is simply enraged that she could have been dumped so selfishly by the man who promised her the world. It is a very proper title to mean BOTH Robert and Holly. They both have never stopped caring and adoring one another, but Robert keeps them apart because he feels...inadequate, incomplete. Like he cannot be a full man...a good husband to take care of Holly as a normal TWO-legged man can.

There is a lot of push and pull between which shows you how heartache and painful this has been for Holly, who worried over Robert the minute she knew he was injured. She would have taken him back in any shape or form, but his stubbornness prevents them from moving forward. It appears like they would've been close to an engagement or a wedding if he had not gone to war.

There is a final culmination of their struggle between each other and their feelings when Robert has to save Holly's life as she gets caught in a sucking mud-pile or somewhere there was a lot of moisture in the sinking dirt/grass like a swamp-area. But he pulls her out and we discover that his wooden foot got stuck in the muck...but he was still able to save Holly and bring her to safety. They do eventually come together and have their much deserved HEA, but it will take much stubbornness and heartache before we eventually reach it. It is very satisfying to see, too. Arlem Hawks's writing was very memorable, so I may check out other books.
