This is the second book/series I’ve ever read with fae elements in it and it is quite interesting to see how much more cruel and inhumane fae could be in other stories.
I couldn’t really tell which era the story took place in the beginning but that might be because I forgot to read the summary. I had to keep reminding myself that this took place in the 1800s. The speech patterns and lack of technology depicted in the book did eventually help me realized that.
I would say that the ending took me by surprise but honestly I think I already had the feeling that they are not going to have a typical happy ending based on the flow of the story. I finished the second half on a plane ride and it kept me awake and vibrating in my seat the entire time.
I really appreciate all the details about the nature and scenery of York. As a person who is raised in the city, it feels as though I’m connecting with something that happened in my childhood despite not ever experiencing it.

Beautifully written, but even though I could follow the plot, I never really got attached to the characters.

This was good and also sad. I was surprised by how strongly I responded to it.
