The entire book was as good as any monster movie! I love Benny and Tom.
Rot & Ruin is an alright book. Some of the story is interesting, and somewhat unique for a zombie novel. The characters, except for Tom, didn't grab me though, so it was hard to care about what was happening to them. The writing was strange, too. Most of it seemed more like Juvenile Fiction than Young Adult.
I'll probably read the next book in the series sometime, just to see where the story goes.

Loved it. Characters were the best. I am reading Dust and Decay for sure.
good story, plot goes by fast enough but not a ton of character development. I should've read this when I was younger and related more to the character. regardless, I own the series so i'm going to read it through
Benny's first memory is of his mother pushing him into his older brother's arms while their zom father came at them. Instead of trying to save his mother, Tom took baby Benny and ran. Ever since Benny has hated his brother, thinking him a coward. But then Benny turns 15 years old and has to either find a job or lose half his rations in town. He and best friend Chong interview at several places but none seem the right fit for Benny. Then Tom offers to Benny on as his apprentice. Tom is a famous bounty hunter, killing zoms. Benny idolizes another bounty hunter duo, but soon finds as he works with Tom that those other guys have no sense of honor. In fact, Benny has to reevaluate what he thinks of the zoms.
A surprisingly tame (meaning no sex or language) zombie book.
JHS/HS

I have to say that I didn't really like this book at the beginning. The first 1/3 of the book was setting everything up and it just felt slow to me. But the last 2/3 of the book were so much better! I loved the development of the main characters as the book progressed. The plot was fairly simple to figure out but I still enjoyed it and the descriptions painted a colorful cast of characters as well as locations.
This book started off with a bang, and I loved every adrenaline fueled second of it, but this is where the 3 star rating gets introduced. The first half of the book has interesting introductions to several post-apocalyptic jobs, real life threatening situations (Zombies), and intrigue. But the author goes from focusing on Zombies to almost neglecting them (in my opinion) in the story. I mean, if I pick up a zombie book I want them to be my primary enemy.
However, this book rapidly falls into a love interest (I don't mind them if done correctly) and kind of jerks you down another path, an almost zombie-less path. I did not find myself loving these characters, and that's a shame because their drama becomes the primary focal point of the book.
Anyway, if you want a strong beginning, decent drama, and an ok read, then this is worth picking up.

- This was a wonderful story!! I'm so excited there are 3 more books, cause I am craving more!!
- Benny was SO whiny at the beginning! I wanted to slap him. He was a little punk. It was so neat to see his transformation from a whiny brat to a more mature teen. I loved his character development.
- I did not expect a freakin' zombie book to make me almost cry. The tears never fell, but they were close. There is so much emotion in this book! There are some very heartfelt moments. It didn't help that my daughter was watching Lilo and Stitch during the letter reading part. Lilo was saying the whole Ohana thing, and I about lost it.
- The story is intense and very sad. There is a wide arrange of emotions, sadness being in the forefront, but there is also hope.
- I loved the Japanese references!! I really want a Katana for the zombie apocalypse. Those babies were meant to slice through humans in the first place.
- The story brought zombies and humanity into a whole new light. The whole idea is so simple, but so original. I've never thought about zombies this way.
- This book was amazing from beginning to end. I thoroughly enjoyed it!! It is one of those books you can't wait to see the end, but you hate when it is over. SO GOOD!!

I DEVOURED this book. Could not stop reading once I started. Best zombie book since Carrie Ryan's Forest of Hands and Teeth.
