I liked this well enough to finish the book, but not enough to pick up the next one in the series. I ended up feeling lukewarm about all of the characters - both the good and bad ones.
It was a fun read. Interested to see where it goes. Main character was initially insufferable.
Heather B. highly recommends this young adult series, saying, "Not fond of zombies? Think again! This amazing book spins the zombie genre on its head, delivering a story that is both nail-biting in its action and plot, as well as philosophical and meditative in regards to life, family, and what is right.''

This was a generally well-written children's book of a zombie apocalypse. But the characterizations somewhat lessened my enjoyment of the story --
* Benny wanted to be treated as an adult, but he certainly didn't act like one. His constant questioning of just about everything drove me nuts. And at 15 years old in a zombie-infested world, I would have expected him to be more mature.
* Likewise, Tom's continual way of "talking down" to Benny also annoyed me.
However, the story was fast-paced and had a unique and interesting plot. Be prepared for a lot of violence, though. I'm not so sure the level of violence was suitable to this book's target audience.

not as good as i thought it would be, but better then some zombie novels
Up to this point, my entire experience with zombie stories has been movies and video games. This book put a new spin on the concept that I hadn't considered before, focusing a lot on death and how we process the horror of death. The story dove into the impact that death has on individuals, especially when there's a lot of it, rather than a hack and slash thriller.
The characters' emotions felt a little inauthentic in places, especially in the beginning, and the plot became more derivative later on in the book. But overall it was a good read.

I have to say that I didn't really like this book at the beginning. The first 1/3 of the book was setting everything up and it just felt slow to me. But the last 2/3 of the book were so much better! I loved the development of the main characters as the book progressed. The plot was fairly simple to figure out but I still enjoyed it and the descriptions painted a colorful cast of characters as well as locations.
Wow. Not usually a fan of zombie books but my nephew let me borrow the series so has to give it a try. I'd say 3.5 stars. But because it's my last book of 2016 I'll round it up to 4! Interesting concept of life after zombies and it's true that man can be monsters more then zombies... I know some that act like monsters. Happy new year.
