Fifteen years after the zombie plague wiped out the world as we know it, people live in fenced towns and must work starting at age fifteen or lose their rations. Benny, fifteen and jobless, is forced to work with his older brother, killing zombies for cash. Benny angrily blames his brother Tom for their mother's death on First Night, but as he follows Tom through the zombie-infested wilds outside town, he starts to learn uneasy lessons about life and death on both sides of the fence and about relationships, courage and morality. As events unfold, he also learns that the undead are not the only monsters out there.
It sounds gloomy or heavily philosophical, but it reads very quickly and easily as you see events and people from Benny's point of view, with the company of his friends. Thought-provoking, yes, but at the same time very entertaining, and not burdened by heavy gore and cheap scares like lots of zombie stories. A fair amount of action that complements, rather than overpowers, the story and character development. Overall a very good read, more of an adventure than a horror story.

I finally got around to reading this book after so many of my students were telling me how good it is. At first I though 1COh no, a zombie book. 1D I couldn 19t be more wrong. While this book does take place in a zombie apocalypse that is not what it 19s about. It 19s really about survival and what it means to be human and to die and how we treat others. The relationships between the characters and their struggles to deal with new realities were what made this book. There was lot 19s of action and plot twists but there were also times I wanted to cry because of the well written dialogue between the characters. I highly recommend this book. You won 19t be disappointed.
This is my absolute favorite zombie book! Totally did not expect this zombie book to be more than just a killing zombies story. This book has romance, family issues, human issues and of course zombie issues. I fell in love with the characters in this book and I am sooo excited that there is a sequel. With lots of twist and turns, you have no idea what is going to happen next. I even cried when a certain someone falls into the hands of evil. Read it! You will not be disappointed.
He's in his big brother's strong arms. He looks back to see his mother reaching for him and straining away from his father who has already turned into a zombie. Benny sees this image in his mind over and over. It has defined his relationship with his brother, Tom who's a respected bounty hunter. It has defined Benny's whole world. How could Tom have left their mother there doing nothing to rescue her? Now at 15 years old, Benny, having nearly exhausted all the possibilities of jobs in Mountainside must give real consideration to apprenticing with his brother, Tom, 'coward' and zombie bounty hunter. It's on his first trip into the Rot & Ruin beyond the fencing that keeps Mountainside 'safe' that Benny finds even his deepest held assumptions challenged.
Good YA zombie book that's more about humanity than zombies. Reminded me a bit of how 28 days later handled things. Writing was smooth and the character development was good. Looking forward to reading the rest. Would recommend.
Wow. I really enjoyed this book. Those looking for a story about cutting down zombies should look elsewhere. One of the primary ideas put forth is that zom's were people at one time and do what they do due to a disease rather than consciously choosing to harm people.
I found this book to be an engrossing and entertaining dip into a world where humanity has cordoned itself off from the Rot & Ruin and is content to not think what lies outside a small town's "protective" fences.

The Zombie Apocalypse Happened.
Nearly 15 years ago Zombies started their reign of terror. No one's sure how - Radiation, Virus. It doesn't matter. Zombies have ruled pretty much ever since.
Small communities sheltered themselves, collected together, long enough to understand how to protect themselves. Bounty Hunters became a thing, to get rid of the zombies attacking people. Not all of them are good though.
Tom Imura is a Bounty Hunter, a good one, but he's a different sort then most. In this post, post-Zombie-Apocalypse setting, when someone turns 15 they have to take up a job of some kind, or get their food ration budget cut by half. Tom's little Brother, Benny, is about to turn 15. Benny wants an easy job with little work, only, he's not having much luck finding one, and he despises the 'Family Business', and his Brother.
Not all is what it seems though.

This was a great book. If you like zombies then you need to read this. It looks at the relationship between Benny and his older brother Tom. Benny has little respect for Tom because he feels that Tom could have done more on First Night (the first night of the zombie apocolypse) to help save their parents. He sees his brother as a coward despite the fact that he goes out into the rot and ruin daily as a bounty hunter. When Benny decides to become Tom's apprentice, he sees that there is a lot more to being a bounty hunter than he originally thought and that the zombies are more complex that he thought. He comes to see his brother in a different light as he sees the corruption in the ruin.
