Have I mentioned that I love Daphne du Maurier? Because this book just cements that love. Brilliantly written, the plot was fantastic with the perfect mix of mystery and romance, with the lovely backdrop of Cornwall

At this point, I feel it's impossible to read a Daphne du Maurier book without constantly thinking of Rebecca. Jamaica Inn almost could not have been more different, which is both a good and bad thing: it shows du Maurier's skill at capturing wildly different settings and characters, but I'm still a little sad that this didn't quite capture the magic of Rebecca.

Mary is, it seems to me, the precursor to many modern YA heroines: she's a (now stereotypical) "strong female character" who's spicy, scrappy, and not afraid of much. The plot, too, feels contemporary: despite being set in the 1800s, this is a page-turner on par with any recent thriller, with twists and turns I figured out only moments before Mary did. And the "bad boy" romantic interest has become something of a trope among current literature. (Speaking of, this was the one thing I actively disliked: why did

Mary decide to go off with Jem?? I just do not see the draw. All I see are a bunch of red flags, as identified and repeatedly pointed out by Mary, the biggest being that Jem has made zero compromises in their relationship. Zero. This is only my second du Maurier book, but can none of her heroines be lucky in love

?) Altogether, the setting, characters, and plot couldn't be more different.

However, what this does have in common with du Maurier's most famous work is that the writing is spell-bindingly gorgeous. Objectively, there may be a lot of description, but it doesn't feel that way: I could read pages and pages of du Maurier's description of the rain and the craggy tors and the heather and the bogs and not get tired of it.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this. I doubt I'll re-read it, but it was absolutely the perfect book to get lost in for a few afternoons on a rocky beach.

Την πρωτη φορα που διαβασα το Jamaica In,στα 14, αποφασισα οτι ειναι ενα απο τα αγαπημενα μου βιβλια, και οτι μονο τετοια θελω να διαβαζω.
Μετα απο 20 χρονια,το επιασα ξανα στα χερια μου. Δεν θελω να κατεβασω τη βαθμολογια, καθαρα για συναισθηματικους λογους, αλλα πρεπει να ομολογησω οτι η δευτερη αναγνωση δεν εμοιαζε με την πρωτη.
Εχοντας διαβασει αρκετα gothic romances απο τοτε, εχω να πω οτι ειναι ενα πολυ καλο βιβλιο σε αυτη την κατηγορια,που ομως δεν ξεφευγει απο την νορμα των gothic romance.
Η γραφη ειναι εξαιρετικη, η ατμοσφαιρα στους καταραμενους ομιχλωδεις βαλτους της Κορνουαλης υποβλητικη,σχεδον ανατριχιαστικη.Ολα τα στοιχεια φαινεται οτι ειναι εκει, η νεαρη αβγαλτη ηρωιδα που ομως ειναι αρκετα ξεροκεφαλη ωστε να ψαχνει μπελαδες, ο βιαιος θειος, η εγκληματικη δραστηριοτητα που κρυβεται πισω απο το πανδοχειο, το ιδιο το μισοερηπωμενο πανδοχειο ,ολα ειναι εκει. Ομως ,it fails to deliver,οπως λεμε και στο χωριο μου. ΠΟλυ συντομα καταλαβαινουμε τι κρυβει το πανδοχειο, ευκολα μπορουμε να προβλεψουμε ποιος ειναι ο κακος που κρυβεται απο πισω,οποτε το υποτιθεμενο twist δεν ειναι καν twist, και παραλληλα τα κινητρα του δεν επεισαν κανενα. Η ηρωιδα απο καποιο σημειο και μετα απλα περιφερεται μεσα στους βαλτους περα δωθε, και οσο για το romance της υποθεσης,ειναι επιπεδου αρλεκιν. Η ξεροκεφαλη,δυναμικη και "αντισυμβατικη" κατα τα αλλα ηρωιδα ,που δεν θελει γαμους και ονειρευεται τη δικη της φαρμα, πεφτει ξερη στην πρωτη κουβεντα που θα της πει ο πρωτος αλογοκλεφτης που συναντα,και που ειναι και μια νεοτερη εκδοχη του βιαιου θειου της.Oh,puh-lease!
