A ripping yarn, and the description of the moors and their bleak and unearthly menace is powerul.

The best Du Maurier Ive read so far. The kind of book where even while I wasnt reading it, I was still thinking about it. The combination of the settings, the characters (especially the mc, mary yellan, icon and girlboss), and relationships make it a completely compelling and fascinating read, and add so much more to the main plot, which is brilliant in itself. I could write a whole dissertation on some of the themes, techniques included in the story, and many thanks to Daphne for the hours of entertainment this book gave me .

Granted, I read most of this pretty quickly on the train from Exeter to York, but it was a fairly entertaining Gothic tale, and du Maurier's imagery of the moors is very compelling. I was less than pleased with the ending but perhaps that's just my 21st century sensibilities getting in the way.

The plot was interesting and had some nice plot twists, but it took me way too long to get through it

She could have done so much more with this setting and these characters.

Not as good as 'Rebecca' but definitely gets better as the story progresses. Last 5/10 chapters I was unable to put the book down, lots of plot twists as well
