When I decided to read this book I had little to no idea what it would be about, but I was thankfully not disappointed! Mary Yellan, in an effort to fulfil her mothers’ dying wish, sets off to live with her aunt in the locally infamous Jamaica Inn. She soon comes to discover the dark secrets of what goes on in the Inn under her uncle Joss Merlyn. One of the things I found interesting about this book was how Mary came to be guilty by association to the Inn and it’s inhabitants the instant she set foot in the door. There’s a hint of a love story, mystery, a plot twist towards the end and a lot of action including violence that is possibly uncharacteristic of a book published in 1939(I think!). It’s an enjoyable, non-labour intensive read that sits midway on the scale between classics and modern literature. Plenty of drawing on nature and pathetic fallacy throughout!

du Maurier definitely stands up to the hype. Was genuinely creeped out a couple of times and loved every minute of it.

Dark and chilling and couldn’t put it down. 90% of this book left me with a giant pit in my stomach. The last quarter of the book took an even darker and more twisted turn and the ending left so much to be desired
Hmmmm.... this is probably my least favourite novel by Daphne du Maurier so far... (I’ve read Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel) Jamaica Inn is definitely one that’s different from the two books I’ve read by her and I didn’t know what to expect! It’s not to say that this novel isn’t good - again, Maurier’s writing on the setting and atmosphere of the story never fails and some characters were really mysterious and dark!
However, I found certain scenes confusing, I just can’t wrap my head around what was happening... and scenes in the second half of the novel were predictable to me. I also wished we could see more development between the main character and the love interest!
Even though this novel didn’t make it to my favourite, our main character, Mary was a pleasant character to read from! I love how strong and brave she was despite facing difficult challenges in her life. It’s no doubt that this is a novel that has feminist themes, and I appreciate Maurier for doing so, considering this is a piece of work written back in the 19th century!

Queria muito ter gostado. Mas que livro cansativo e entediante. Eu ficava com sono a cada duas página que lia.
E nem me peçam pra comentar o fim.
