This was so fun! I originally read this series back in like grades 6-8, but saw some of them at a thrift store recently and decided to do a re-read and man this was good

It's a little dated and a bit cliche, and I can see now that it's clearly heavily Buffy-inspired, but it works well and I'm not mad at it. I just really liked it, maybe partially because of a nostalgia factor, but also just because it was a good read. Meg Cabot probably doesn't need me to give her her flowers, but I will anyway. She's a good fucking writer! Everything flows really nicely and the characters are engaging and loveable! I laughed out loud multiple times while reading this! It got me out of a reading slump that I felt coming on after a couple of meh reads!

I was worried Suze might be unlikeable, but imo Meg Cabot does a good job of making her a bit of an angsty teenager without being over the top and unbearable. She clearly loves her mom and it was really nice to see her overall get along with and start to form relationships with her step-dad and step-brothers. Really looking forward to reading the next one!

This is still one of my favorite series from when I was a kid! I reread it every few years, & it’s like stepping back in time, back to carefree days. I fall right back into the story! & fall in love with Suze & Jesse all over again!

A reread of a book I read many moons ago! Meg Cabot’s Princess Diaries series was my JAM as a kid, and I read pretty much everything else she wrote. Though I never quite got into this series back then. I’m down for a little paranormal romance, but something about this just doesn’t quite grab me like her other works. I think the main character is a little bland compared to her protagonists in her other books? But I’m being really picky. I’d still recommend this to tweens and YA readers, it actually aged okay! Though CW for suicide, as that’s how one ghost ended up a ghost.

Decent storyline, mostly sets up the rest of the series, I presume. Suze is very strong as a character and narrator – including her faults. It is a bit dated socially which got grating around the midpoint.
