This is still one of my favorite series from when I was a kid! I reread it every few years, & it’s like stepping back in time, back to carefree days. I fall right back into the story! & fall in love with Suze & Jesse all over again!
Graphic: Suicide
Moderate: Body shaming, Bullying, Death, Injury/Injury detail, Medical content, Suicide, and Violence
Minor: Incest, Murder, Blood, Death of parent, and Homophobia

Decent storyline, mostly sets up the rest of the series, I presume. Suze is very strong as a character and narrator – including her faults. It is a bit dated socially which got grating around the midpoint.
Minor: Medical content and Violence
The homophobia is verbal and portrayed negatively, but the f slur is used and the behavior is trivialized. Most of the book is set in a Catholic mission and there are brief descriptions of Catholic portrayals of Native Americans. There are some injuries and scenes in the hospital.
