The Devil's Code is probably the most far-fetched of the four Kidd novels by John Sandford, but also probably my favorite. It's a classic David vs. Goliath story, with computer hackers in the David role, and big business and the federal government as Goliath. Both Kidd's and LuEllen's unique skills come in to play, and they seem comfortable in the role of anti-heroes. Sandford wrote this one with the help of his son, Ros, a computer guy himself, who helped block out the story. They should collaborate more.

I read this years ago but had forgotten all about it, so I decided to reread to see if I want to keep it on my shelves. 2.5 stars on reread. Pros: it is a very quick read, and I like stories about heists or other crime-planning. Cons: it is very very dated on the tech-front (makes sense with a book about computer stuff written in a time most people didn’t have one), and there is some sexism and homophobia in there that is fortunately also very outdated by now. This book can definitely leave my collection.
Graphic: Gun violence
Moderate: Sexism and Drug use
Minor: Homophobia

This book was one recommended to me, it was a quick read that wasn't too involved. The character of Kidd was endearing for a criminal/artist, but his counterpart LuEllen I didn't enjoy at all she was coked out for no apparent reason and seems to just float through and had no place in the story line. It wasn't a believable novel for a mystery/thriller/espionage style story but it was okay for what I was expecting.

You'd have to really be a computer geek (I'm not) to truly love this book. Sandford always tells a great story, but I much prefer his Lucas Davenport series. My eyes glazed over quite a bit in parts of this story where he went into detail about technical stuff that means little to me.
Still an exciting story, though!
