Fun travelogue, but nothing I wasn't aware of already.

cute! this is aimee major-steinburger's travelogue about a trip she took to japan with some friends where she got to experience deep fannish joy and have the occasional awkward moment of being the tallest woman in any given situation. 3 stars

I have only been to Japan once, but I would say Steinberger's presentation is spot on. I love that she was able to talk about all her interests - cosplay, dolls, etc. - and also incorporate Japanese cultural facts. It provides a good description and illustration of what it is like to visit Japan. This is a great book for the beginner "Japanophile."

I really enjoyed the art in this graphic novel. The author added more detailed pictures when necessary, which was nice. I liked seeing the different fashions and culture Aimee experienced.
The story was a bit lacking. It was cute and fun, but lacked substance. Travel narratives just might not be my thing.

I would hand this cartoon travel memoir to any teen otaku who has dreamed of traveling to Japan. It's drawn in a manga style and contains pleeeenty of Japanese fashion and pop culture.

This was on a YALSA graphic novel list from a while ago which is why I read it. I definitely do not at all relate to the main character (she looooooves frilly stuff and cosplay and dolls and anime/manga), but it was enjoyable to read about all the goofy fun stuff she and her friends did during their visit. I might recommend it to teens who like travel and/or Japanese (pop) culture.

think this will make a good summer book talk book for the middle school visits. Cute art, quick, breezy read, simple storyline.

A fun and fast read, with simple yet delightful artwork.

Our author/illustrator, Aimee, lives out every otaku fangirl's dream of going to Japan: staying at an onsen, dressing as a maiko (apprentice geisha), being served at a butler cafe, and of course unbelieveable shopping! She makes frequent references to things that remind her of manga she's read-something I'm sure I'd do too!

I love Aimee's breezy, fun writing style, her fangirlish delight in Japan, and as I said, the artwork.

I am buying a copy of this to enjoy over and over, and to share with my otaku fangirl and fanboy friends.
