Such an enjoyable read. The theme of poverty was too real. It’s so relatable and I felt so connected to the characters because in some ways I know that struggle.

“Who taught me how to steal, who made me do it, if not the state?“ (p235)

“He understood her the way she understood him, with the solidarity of anger and invisibility.” (p191)

“There's an inherent limit to the stress that any material can bear. Water has its boiling point, metals their melting points.
The elements of the spirit behave the same way. Happiness can reach a pitch so great that any further happiness can't be felt.
Pain, despair, humiliation, disgust, and fear are no different.
Once the vessel is full, the world can't add to it.” (p139)

Adding this to the list of writing that makes my brain go pop. Must read more Zweig now.

They were deceiving each other, but not really. They both knew how senseless it was to be sitting in a noisy room full of people when what they really wanted was to be alone together; to be telling each other transparent lies when body and soul yearned for truth and deeper intimacy.
“Next Sunday it’s sure to be nice out,” she said. “The rain can’t go on forever.”

I reallyyyy like his writing and his ability to express like sadder more complex emotions (again idrk tho bc it is translated) but i think that the second half is a bit long winded and is not as good as the first half. Also at one point in the story the mc goes from being a little girl in my head to an adult, idk when it happened but there was a shift in her mentality that was so well written. Initially, i didnt enjoy the relationship between the mc and the brother in law’s friend but as i read i realised they barely even have a relationship and are only really in kahoots bc they pity eachother which i think is incredibly sad. The ending may seem abrupt but its obvious that if it it was finished Zweig would make their plan fail bc thats js how he is and the open ending leaves room for imagination. Great commentary on poverty and its effects that honestly made be remember that even if i made it rich one day, i wouldn’t be able to handle it and i would never fit in.

If I hadn’t seen such riches, I could live with being poor
