Read when you are in an anti-capitalist, resentful, bitter mood. Imagine getting a glimpse of a life you could have had, only to be returned against your will to the slog of a life of poverty. Post-war reality. This was all the more relatable since I read this while at the same age as the protagonist. I have included a warning for suicidal thoughts/ideations, and you can get a sense of how the author and his wife decided to end their lives.
