The book was good, I liked that Kvothe got some character development he REALLY needed. I wish he didn’t spend so much time in the university or so much time simping over Denna

I really enjoyed this book!

My favorite sequence is the time Kvothe spent with Felurian. (What can you expect? I’m faerie trash.)  I did not enjoy the Ademre sequence - even though the women are badasses, I still found it somehow misogynistic. Maybe it’s because of Kvothe, and how he tainted the time he spent there by talking about how it’s not proper for women to fight, women where he comes from do not fight, and bemoaning that he was paired to spar with a little girl. I just found that that part of the book really dragged, and even though we spent a lot of time there, I didn’t get close to any of the women, and I didn’t get the feeling that Kvothe really respected any of the women? I was waiting for it to be over, and him to go back to the Maer. Even though I didn’t care much for the court politics and the Maer, I still felt like there was more life in that part of the story than the piece in the Ademre.

But aside from that portion of the book… this was such a captivating and excellent story. I still love the parts with Bast, the Chronicler, and Kvothe-the-tavernkeep the most. It feels so fresh to read a fantasy story this way - to have the days laid out this way, and the story told from the hero’s perspective while a perfect stranger and truly good friend listen in.

Bast is obviously still my favorite

I love a scary faerie man

I did not realise this book was so long… I agree with the other comments about how it would have been better split into clearer defined sections.

After nearly 2000 pages across book 1/2 combined it feels like we’re no closer to learning about Kvothe’s / the world’s current situation though.  Is this really going to end with book 3 or will we need to wait 10+ years for a book 4 too……

I feel like this review has been ever so slightly negative so far but I genuinely do really like this book. The distance between key events (although this might bore a lot of people) is relaxing to read and it’s nice to see Kvothe grow up.
Some good things are FINALLY happening to him 💔

That being said, I wasn’t particularly fond of the sexual elements of this book, I don’t think it served much purpose beyond one scene towards the end.

I’m struggling to rate this book but I’m leaving it somewhere between a 3.5-4 for now.

Side note—> I’ve been trying to remember which book the fae section was from for years so I was very happy when I stumbled upon it during this reread.

Synopsis-free, spoiler-free review.
Can I admit that towards the end of this book I wondered what had happened in the first 90% to justify making it so long? I mean… I'm all for slow-paced books. I don't need action in my books, I can live on prose and vibes basically. And Rothfuss absolutely delivers both of these, which is why I reached the end of this book. But did I care for the main character along the 1100 pages of his adventures? Nope. Did I believe he had been dictating those 1100 pages in a day, as he is supposed to have done? Certainly not. The audiobook is over 42 HOURS, come on. 😂 Did the fact that the number of women went from 1 in book 1 to a handful in book 2 make it less cringy? I'm not entirely sure. Readers, I am confused. I don't know what to think except that this was *very* long. And while I still enjoy book 1 upon re-reading it, I don't feel like re-reading this one. One thing I'm happy about is having read the book that had been sitting on my TBR for the longest time (we're talking at least 6 years, probably more).
