So um, I didn't really understand the most of what I have just read.
A couple things I know though:
It made me extremely uncomfortable, which I think should be a good point of it, but me not expecting it, made it not so good
The way we're immediately dropped in the middle of whatever was happening didn't help me understand it any better
Over all not, didn't do much for me except make me very weirded out

This story, while short, left me on the edge of my seat. It took a gruesome turn that I was not expecting! Khaw's writing was brilliant. I will say the story left me wanting more. The descriptions were vivid and the characters exciting along with being fleshed out despite the short length.
A short story I would definitely recommend.

Oh, Cassandra Khaw, I truly should have known better after suffering through [b:Nothing But Blackened Teeth|53195923|Nothing But Blackened Teeth|Cassandra Khaw|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1610469240l/53195923._SY75_.jpg|80287448], and yet I allowed myself to be misled by the rave reviews of [b:These Deathless Bones|35506557|These Deathless Bones|Cassandra Khaw|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1498282454l/35506557._SY75_.jpg|56914935], a short story that, just like the aforementioned novel, is both underwhelmingly simplistic and overwritten at the same time, and squanders a fascinatingly promising premise. It's hard to tell whether Khaw is unwilling to or incapable of exploring the fantastic ideas she has in the depth and detail they deserve and require, or whether she's under pressure from publishers to prioritize quantity over quality.
This is part of an anthology of short stories, but it’s such an amazing story that I couldn’t help but rate it on its own. I thought it was gonna be about an evil stepmother but oh, it’s definitely not and it’s amazing. I look forward to reading more stories by this author.
i really wanted more from this story, it was intriguing but i didn’t feel very connected since you’re thrown right into it and get very little backstory or real explanation for things. i am looking forward to reading more from them, though :)
