“Rose only hangs out with guys and psychopaths," said Mia.

"Well," he said cheerfully, "since I'm both a psychopath and a guy, that would explain why we're such good friends.”

This was so much better than I expected! I found this one to be really captivating, and it was exactly the medicine I needed after reading such a mediocre vampire book before this. I love all the character development for Rose as well, it's really nice seeing all these different sides of her and seeing her grow as a person. Also, I think I'm in love with Adrian, he's extremely charming, and adds that nice bit of spice to the story. I'm pretty excited to continue this series.

The continuation of Rose's journey to becoming a guardian and her complicated relationship with Dimitri takes a dramatic turn when Mason decides to take a small group to go hunting for Strigoi and gets captured. It's up to Rose to save the day and right her mistakes, but when it comes to fighting vampires, happy endings aren't always the outcome.

This book was just as good as the first, and I'll be reading the rest of the series!

By the way, my name’s Rose Hathaway. I’m seventeen years old, training to protect and kill vampires, in love with a completely unsuitable guy, and have a best friend whose weird magic could drive her crazy. Hey, no one said high school was easy.

I love this series. Honestly, this book might’ve been even better than the first. Vampire Academy had to set the stage, which it did wonderfully, but this one just jumped right into the action and didn’t look back. And yes, I was sad about who was lost, but I also understand how important that loss will end up being to Rose’s character development.

Other thoughts:

I've just squealed with joy and delight while weeping with grief. Several times. In the last 3 or so chapters. But one thing must be said, Rose's character is one I admire overall. She is one kickass guardian, while still managing to be essentially human (which I've never said about a half-vampire before). This book, and so far this series, means a lot to me in life.
